Vehicle Description On its release, Enzo Ferrari called it The most beautiful car ever made.
The Jaguar E-Type was birthed from the D-Type, a full-out racing car with sensuously curved aerodynamic styling that had achieved tremendous success in international competition.
As Jaguar's management required a new, more competitive production model, its designers set about creating a car suitable for road use.
That led to the famous, feline curves developed by Malcolm Sayer, a trained aerodynamicist, using wind tunnel testing and aircraft principles.
In addition, this model was constructed around a lightweight monocoque unibody that had a tubular subframe (to carry the engine, front suspension and steering) and an independent rear axle.
Jaguar's E-Type debuted to universal applause at the March 1961 Geneva Motor Show and became a smashing success since it offered so much for relatively little.
It was no more expensive than most other sports cars, yet it was also more beautiful than the priciest offerings from other manufacturers.

While the design would evolve over its 13 years of production, the Jaguar E-Type never ceased being as beautiful as when it was first created.
But for many, the E-Type's greatest asset was that it looked the part and that nothing else looked like it.
Whether labeled E-Type or XKE, as it was sold in the United States, it made a statement about its owner and all who rode in it.
Not long after its inception, an onslaught of safety and emissions regulations began having their way with the E-Type, resulting in the alteration of both its appearance and its performance.
For those reasons, the Series 1 cars, built from 1961 to 1966, are the most highly prized.
The 1966 roadster offered a 4.
2-litre model with an all-new synchromesh gearbox and more comfortable seats than earlier models.
A new brake booster was also adopted, and the enlarged 4.
2-litre engine resulted in greater torque for better tractability in everyday driving.
Thus, the XKE retained its pure form with no external changes -- including the covered headlights and thin side-lights and taillights that are still considered so attractive and desirable -- but it was also now more comfortable and responsive on the road.
Dale Adams, expert restorer of many Pebble Beach winners, bought and restored this striking Jag in the '70s.
It was a frame-off nut-and-bolt restoration as only Dale would do.
He owned this car for 55 years, as it was his favorite, and lovingly cared for it until his death (read about Dale's Jaguar journey in the included AACA's Antique Automobile magazine article).
Dale was a true artist when it came to restoration and metal shaping, having learned his trade from Fay Butler.
The panel fit on this Jag, as many have noted, is as perfect as the day it left the factory.
The high-performance engine was rebuilt by a well-known Jaguar expert, Earl Gibbs to the following specifications:

Its Carmen Red paint still shows nicely (although it is showing some stress cracks, as a paint this old can do) and the chrome gleams with no pits or blemishes.
