Affectionately called the mouse that roared by none other than Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the LT-1 delivered big-block performance with great handling by virtue of much lower weight and often slipped under the purview of increasingly watchful insurance companies on the lookout for big-block premiums.
While lowered compression ratios brought gross horsepower ratings down to 330 HP by 1971, performance was essentially intact even with the switch to stricter SAE Net ratings for 1972; despite a new 255 HP rating for 72, performance was the same as it was in 1971.
