Agarwood, aloeswood, eaglewood and gaharu are all names for the resinous, fragrant and highly valuable heartwood produced primarily by Aquilaria species, in the family Thymelaeaceae. Agarwood, also known as gaharu in Malay, is an important non-timber forest product. As incense, perfume and medicine, it has been used for hundreds of years by many cultures throughout the world. Historically, agarwood has been used for medicinal, aromatic and religious purposes in Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Hindu societies.
