Registered Nurse (Specialty Clinic)
The RN must possess the skills needed to effectively work with others to communicate directions and offer assistance. In addition, the RN must demonstrate well-developed organizational skills, as well as skills in teaching, consultation and communication, and require minimal direct supervision. The RN must obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. The RN should be a citizen of the United States however, non-citizens may be appointed when no qualified U.S. citizens are available in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health or designee. Other achievements and documented performance may be considered or necessary. The Staff RN cares for Veteran patients and functions independently in all NEXUS Specialty Clinics and in all procedure Clinics to which the Staff RN has been successfully oriented. The Staff RN is also responsible and accountable for maintaining training required and may be assigned additional duties as area needs require. The Staff RN is expected to communicate timely and effectively with all members of the patient care team, as well as relate courteously and appropriately to all internal and external customers. The Staff RN must be able to push-pull and lift 35 pounds and must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Finally, the Staff RN is expected to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, and demonstrate consistent effective communication skills and exemplary professional behaviors. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
