Major Duties and
Responsibilities:
Incumbent fabricates, constructs, alters, repairs, and modifies structures and assemblies to include walls, partitions, doors, roofs, furniture, cabinets, countertops, shelving forms, and shipping crates.
(Other examples included in institutional carpentry work are window frames, glass, door closures, exit devices, displays, hinges, builder's hardware, or prosthetic devices, will be installed, repaired or constructed in association with respective jobs and projects.
Constructs walls and partitions primarily using metal studs and plates; however, will also be required to work occasionally with wood/lumber for walls and partitions, rafters, floor joists, and bridging.
Installs and/or replaces wood or metal doorframes, window frames, windows and doors.
Installs sheetrock and insulation, paneling, roofing materials, pegboard and soundproofing materials.
Ceiling grid systems and acoustical tile will be installed or replaced as will asbestos or vinyl commercial grade floor tile.
Will also install new installations of cove base, corner guards, handrails, and protective wall rails.
Installs plastic laminate such as formica, moldings, or picture frames.
Constructs stairs and makes barricades as examples.
Incumbent installs, maintains, repairs and troubleshoots all types of locks.
Lock repairs and re-keying jobs may take priority over other tasks or jobs due to requirements for maintaining and preserving physical security in the VAMC.
Incumbent works with mortise, cylindrical, rim, cabinet locks, padlocks, safe and cash box locks.
Of these, works with interchangeable core, conventional pin tumbler, water and barrel locks.
Performs the full cycle of locating problems, disassembly, repair, cleaning, reassembly, and reinstallation.
Makes initial or new lock installations on doors, drawers, cabinets, and medicine carts.
Maintains the VAMC Great-Great-Grand Master Key space lock system and auxiliary lock systems.
Computerized keying records are maintained by the incumbent.
Makes keys for VAMC employees and contractor personnel.
Repairs vaults and safes, and cash boxes.
Picks open locks when personnel have lost keys and makes keys by codes or impression method.
Performs minor masonry and plastering related tasks in association with institutional carpentry duties.
Will make minor repairs and changes to plaster walls, brick, block, and tile installations.
Mixes cement, mortar, white and brown coat plaster for minor repairs and installations.
Assists mason on major projects such as new sidewalks, slabs, concrete floors, plaster walls and ceilings, brick and block walls, and curbs.
Above suspended ceilings will install ceiling mounted equipment to slabs; installs wire mesh and plaster around cable and pipe runs through smoke barrier walls.
Mortises door for locks and hinges and installs these devices in metal and wood doors.
Regularly repairs and installs other types of builders' hardware to include doorsteps, push and pull plates, kick plates, window latches, mirrors, and wall mounted dispensers.
Performs preventive maintenance and other related duties as assigned.
