Associate Scientist POSITION
Summary:
To support and execute on studies relating to the development of next generation immune isolation device for an insulin-secreting, glucose-responsive cell therapy targetting diabetes.
To apply biomaterials, polymer membranes, cell biology and molecular biology strategies and techniques to evaluate critical device components, overall device performance and cell functionality.
To support and execute on studies using pre-clinical models of diabetes and transplantation.
To apply design of experiments, process development, and process optimization expertise as applicable to medical device/pharmaceutical/biologics product research & development.
Essential Functions:
Advanced characterization of micro/nanoporous polymer membranes by capillary flow porometry.
Lab-scale fabrication of devices per established procedures to support in-vitro and pre-clinical animal studies.
Asceptic cell loading into device using standard cell biology techniques.
Develop new and improved cell loading techniques for experimental device prototypes.
Evaluate new polymeric membranes for device fabrication.
Optimize existing device fabrication processes for new materials.
Evaluate prototype device performance and functional responses of cells utilizing cellular and protein assays and techniques (Flow cytometry, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and PCR).
Cell Culture:
Isolate, maintain, and analyze primary stem cell cultures to support characterization of a therapeutic cell product to treat diabetes.
Test method development and validation utilizing the techniques described above.
Administration:
Maintain accurate records, perform data analysis, and communicate results through written and oral summaries to a cross-disciplinary team of personnel.
Provide relevant documentation (including written protocols and reports) needed for test method and process validation in compliance with design control requirements.
Intellectual Property:
Be familiar with relevant published patents; support and contribute to writing of internal patent application OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES / DETAILED DUTIES:
Show basic understanding of laboratory techniques associated with work assignments.
Schedule experiments in the lab and perform research in a timely, competent manner.
Able to independently solve routine problems and develop solutions.
Recommend modifications to methodology and understand the impact of those modifications on the broader research area.
Able to review, analyze, and interpret data, especially as requires in-depth evaluation of various factors of increasing and/or changing complexity.
Prepare technical reports, summaries, written protocols, and analysis.
Interact with employees inside and outside of the immediate working group in a collegial, professional manner, sharing information and expertise.
Foster communciation and collaborative teamwork.
Provide guidance to new or junior personnel.
May serve as liaison to wider internal or external scientific community.
Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to company's environmental health & safety (EH&S) guidelines.
Required skills:
Bachelor of Science with 3-5 years relevant experience in scientific discipline; Masters preferred.
Must have experience with cell cultures.
Strong preference for pharma or biotech experience.
