Lead Police Officer (Canine)

The position is located in the Police & Security Service at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC.
The primary duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
-Incumbent serves as a Canine Enforcement Officer, Lead Police Officer, under the general supervision of the Chief of Police and the direct supervision of the Supervisory Police Officer (Lieutenant).
-He/she will utilize a trained working dog to track/trail and locate missing patients, detect illicit illegal narcotics and deter criminal activity for the Medical Center.
-He/she will work within a mix of jurisdictional arrangements ensuring compliance with and enforces a full range of Federal, State and Local laws, ordiances, rules and regulations.
-He/she will perform duties in all aspect of the Canine Program to include implementing broad spectrum of specialized canine training.
-He/she will plan, coordinate, maintain and schedule records of the canine program activities.
-He/she will patrol other VA owned property as work assignments dictates.
-He/she will ensure canine team is properly in all phases to include inspections, investigations, law enforcement and security.
-He/she is responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of assigned canine.
-He/she is responsible for the mission readiness and compliant with safety requirements to negate violations of the assigned canine.
-He/she will be directly responsible for leading the technical work of at least two or more Police Officers and one Dispatcher.
-He/she is responsible for ensuring the shift work assignments are distributed and performed by employees.
-He/she will service as the Primary Narcotics Custodian; maintaining full custody and control of the narcotics room and it contents of registered amount.
-He/she will maintain direct liaison with the DEA Inspector, Canine Supervisor and the Program Manager at the Law Enforcement Training Center for scheduling inspections of the program.
-He/she may be assigned as Officer in Charge in absence of a police supervisor.
-May be assigned other duties by the Deputy Chief or Chief of Police.
