Duties and
Responsibilities: Vehicles are driven primarily for transporting merchandise, supplies and other materials to and from Navy Exchanges.
Operates trucks or truck tractors with trailer or semitrailer coupled by means of a turntable (fifth wheel) or pintle (pivot) hook, and /or tandem rig consisting of either a single trailer or two trailers in tow. Vehicles have a gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 lbs. They are also equipped with air brake connections between the truck or truck tractor and trailer or semitrailer; driving controls include gear shift lever, brake pedal, accelerator, clutch and air brake control and levers for supplying power to the driving wheels. Vehicles are used in supplying power to the driving wheels. Vehicles are used in over-the-road operation to transport merchandise, supplies and materials to and from Navy Exchanges or other designated places. May be required to pick up freight from commercial firms enroute, using public roads and highways. May be required to back-haul hazardous material.
Loads and unloads vehicle as required; ensures cargo is properly located, distributed for even weight and secured, and that vehicle is not loaded beyond capacity. Signs for and obtains receipts for cargo; notes over, short, or damaged merchandise.
Completes pre and post trips inspection reports and performs preventive maintenance on assigned vehicle (or vehicle being utilized for that days work).
Warehouses palletized or bilk stock according to specified locations, restocking warehousing items and straightening stacks as directed; sorts out bad containers and restocks or takes to bin areas. Periodically checks bags or bins for mixed stock or incorrect locations, corrects or notifies supervisor of problems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL EFFORT A great deal of physical effort is required to turn large and heavy vehicles, and to operate the additional controls and two braking systems. Making couplings between vehicle and towed equipment requires moderate physical effort in that heavy chains, bars, hooks, etc. Must be lifted and properly secured. Moderate physical effort is required in the occasional handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, while loading and unloading cargo.
WORKING CONDITIONS Works outside and is occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. Drives in all types of weather and traffic, and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents from the vehicle jackknifing. Is subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Must possess a valid state commercial driver's license (CDL) with a class A endorsement of tractor trailors, semi-trailors, or combination vehicles.
2. Must possess a H endorsement on their CDL which permits them to transport hazardous materials (HazMAt).
3. Must meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass a pre employment drug screening.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Associate must receive HazMat training within 90 days of hire per Department of Transportation regulations. Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the applicant fails to report to the scheduled drug test appointment. Incumbents of drug testing designated positions will be subject to random testing. Drug test results will be provided to the employing activity/command
Qualifications: GENERAL
Experience: One year of experience that provided the knowledge and ability to perform the duties of operating a tractor trailer, semitrailer or combination vehicle.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR
Experience: One year of high school education may be substituted for 3 months of general experience up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience.
SPECIALIZED
Experience: Three years of experience operating a tractor trailer, semitrailer, or combination vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 lbs. Possession of a valid state commercial driver's license (CDL) with a class A endorsement of tractor trailers, semi-trailers, or combination vehicles and possession of an H endorsement on CDL that permits the transport hazardous materials (HazMAt) and the ability to meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass a pre- employment drug screening.
