We're looking for a Research Manager who will lead a new Safety Engineering team in Wyandotte to support research and development in North America. The team will be embedded in a Chemical and Process Engineering group that strives to achieve and maintain Client's technological leadership by developing innovative solutions for Client operations, improving methods for future developments, and advancing new technologies.
The Safety Engineering Team will assume responsibility for the assessment of chemical reactions, classification of substances, dispersion modeling, explosion characterization, consequence analysis and other aspects of experimental safety testing including reaction calorimetry. It will also assume responsibility for the design, evaluation and verification of complex overpressure protection systems.

-Functional and disciplinary lead of a team (comprised of engineers and laboratory) with a broader work scope than his/her own area of expertise, including performance appraisals with all team members; manage resources of team; budget responsibility of team, active project acquisition for team. Drive forward growth of team through recruitment and development of team members.
-Self-dependent execution of complex projects (including complex entire processes, process steps or subtasks that require a high level of specialized know-how and/or broad experience); follow global safety engineering rules and best practices and document according results; proposes new projects and actively drives forward possibilities of optimization
-Management of complex projects or sub-project. Self-dependent interaction with stakeholders/customers (e.g. plant manager, process manager, others) to clarify needs, boundary conditions, solution proposal - deal with high level of controversy in communication situations with stakeholders in order to achieve the overall best result/solution; support team member's interaction with customers, especially in critical situations
-Responsible for compliance to EHS rules in his/her area of activity. Initiates safety review for experiments and ensures compliance to according measures. Takes over EHS responsibility for team.
Broaden own network in regional Client R&D community and with R&D community in Ludwigshafen; actively use network for own project tasks. Build up network with relevant partners/customers in NA and globally and use network for project acquisition;
-Active broadening of own knowledge in field of expertise; broaden own repertoire of methods (including leadership). Ensure know-how transfer within the team and within a project team. Assumes a radar function for own area of expertise: observes and evaluates new methods (current literature!), market trends and the activities of competitors (patents, literature).
-Develops and implements strategy for further development of team (scientific, personnel), determines the technology roadmap for research projects together with his/her peers in Ludwigshafen (method development and other) in order to keep technology leadership.
Qualifications:
-Chemical Engineering degree with significant experience of at least 5
years in safety engineering and experience or significant exposure to research and development both on the theoretical, mathematical modeling side as well as on the experimental side involving planning, supervising and analysis of lab experiments.
-Experience in safety engineering shall involve several key areas, preferably design, evaluation and verification of complex overpressure protection systems. In addition experience in the assessment of chemical reactions, classification of substances, dispersion modeling, explosion characterization, consequence analysis and other aspects of experimental safety testing including reaction calorimetry would be beneficial.
-Strong methodological background for problem identification and solving problems with long term sustainable solutions as well as experience in supervising lab experiments.
-Able to acquire for the team projects and subsequently able to coordinate complex projects and supervise the project work of employees.
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to successfully interact with internal and external customers.
-Comfortable working with multinational teams and have preferably gained international experience.
Strong leader with experience in recruiting and forming a team.
