The GQC Specialist position requires the ability to perform all aspects of the bench work done on a daily basis in the Genetic Quality Control (GQC) area of the Diagnostic & GQC Laboratory, including preparation of reagents, performing DNA extractions, diluting & pipetting samples, and performance of molecular and immunological assays. Further, this position will be responsible for all aspects of program management for the GQC area, including data manipulation and analysis, QC analysis, report generation, scheduling and coordination of sample receipt, billing, budgeting, and customer interfacing. Moreover, the incumbent will act as a Lead Technologist to other technologists working in the GQC area of the Laboratory, and is required to provide training and assign work to other staff members as needed.
The GQC Specialist will draw on their previous experience working in a high-throughput laboratory to make significant contributions to achieve workflow process efficiencies, as well as assist department management in helping the GQC area conform to the new standards of a JAX Critical Supplier. Additionally, the GQC Specialist will draw on their experience in the field to assist department management in keeping testing methodology in sync with current technology, work to convert older assays to newer, more effective platforms, and assist in the design of assays to further distinguish JAX strains.
In addition to duties in the GQC area, the GQC Specialist will be required to cross train for all essential tasks performed the Diagnostic area of The Jackson Laboratory, including the handling and necropsy of mice, performance of assays in microbiology, parasitology, serology and molecular biology, preparation of microbiologic media, data entry, and health report generation.

Required Skills
Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences (or similar field) is required. A Master's degree in the Genetics or Molecular Biology is highly desirable. Other means of education and experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
The ideal candidate will possess an in-depth knowledge of mouse genetics & JAX strains.
Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy is essential to be successful in this position. Further, strong organizational and analytical investigative abilities are necessary.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead others toward the accomplishment of individual and shared objectives including experience in planning, prioritizing, and assigning work; training staff; and monitoring their daily performance.
Demonstrated ability to multitask and work independently in a high-throughput laboratory environment.
The ability to successfully utilize several different computerized databases and Microsoft-based programs is required.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with personnel at all levels of The Jackson Laboratory, both in written and oral form. This includes the demonstrated ability to train others, as well as the ability to engage in and foster teamwork in a fast paced setting.
Required Experience
Three - five years practical laboratory experience performing molecular assays is required. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience working in a high-throughput genetic testing laboratory with an emphasis on producing premium quality data.
