The Chief of SPS is a registered professional and is accountable to the Associate Medical Center Director of Patient Care Services and performs the administrative and personnel management and evaluation functions relative to the SPS staff supervised in SPS and other areas that perform high level disinfection/sterilization on a 24 hour basis. This includes establishing guidelines for performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee supervisory performance management systems. The Chief of SPS provides leadership by identifying and maintaining SPS & Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) standards for the practice of services and contributes to the fulfillment of the mission of the clinical areas. In the supervisor role, the Chief of SPS participates in assessing the decontamination, pre-cleaning processes, high level disinfection/sterilization process, and utilization throughout the medical center. The incumbent participates in assessing the environment, analyzing trends, transmitting data, communicating ideas, developing and implementing policies, initiating programs and systems, developing and maintaining a quality improvement program and collaborating in the management of resources. The incumbent has knowledge in areas of patient care practices, asepsis, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, communication and program administration. The Chief of SPS demonstrates expertise and comprehensive understanding of the decontamination/sterilization process. The role involves clinical, administrative, research, and educational components, which impact patients and healthcare personnel throughout the medical center. The incumbent ensures the practice of RME is consistent with the VA standards, including VHA Directives, VISN 9 policies and external standards, such as The Joint Commission, AORN, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), ISO 9001 principles and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM). The Chief of SPS plays a leadership role in ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of quality and effectiveness of RME & SPS processes and practices. The incumbent assesses educational needs of the RME staff and implements an educational plan to meet these needs. The Chief of SPS collaborates with all services within the medical center. In particular, the Chief of SPS collaborates directly with Infection Control and Nurse Manager of the Operating Room (OR). Adheres to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice.
The Chief of SPS is responsible for assessing, monitoring, developing and assisting with implementing corrective action plans for instrument and reusable medical equipment processing, decontamination, sterilization, biological monitoring, and high level disinfecting monitoring. The Chief of SPS will coordinate recall activities related to reusable medical equipment and as directed. The Chief SPS provides is responsible for the implementation, management and oversight of ISO 9001 principles within the Sterile Processing Service. The Chief of SPS is an active member of the SPS Management Committee, the Infection Control Committee and the Medical Center Commodity Standard Board. The Chief of SPS will collaborate and communicate information or concerns between clinical services and RME. The Chief SPS will be responsible for oversight of all RME training activities.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). _Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia_. Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor''s degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master''s degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master''s degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
