Responsibilities:
Will perform moderate to complex mechanical integration tasks by providing hands-on support to flight projects by using specialized equipment and techniques. Will work with engineers and technicians in the assembly, integration, testing, lifting, transport and launch support of spaceflight components, hardware, instruments, and spacecraft. Will provide the talent to integrate flight hardware components, perform critical lifts, support the fabrication and modification of specialized components, work with detailed procedures and participate in logistics activities. May work within a team or individually on a task. Must demonstrate a high level of competency. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. May lead and direct the work of others. Will interact and communicate with various customers, technicians and engineers. Will work in fabrication and clean room areas using various hand and machine tools and provide an overall knowledge of spacecraft hardware and integration techniques. Will provide support on carriers and instruments. Will coordinate support from other areas such as metrology, environmental test and contamination. Will develop procedures, work orders and assist in developing estimates. Will provide liaison with Project personnel in setting schedules, documenting design changes, identifying requirements and fabricating components. Will Interface with Government, Quality Assurance, Safety, and Contamination to ensure NASA guidelines are strictly met. Mentor fellow technicians in the proper practices of handling, assembly, testing, and design of flight hardware. Field support at other NASA installations or vendors will be required for the fabrication, assembly and launch effort. May be required to work overtime with short notice and travel for extended periods.
Machinist Duties:
Read, interpret, and work to mechanical assembly drawings provided in industry standard format or in electronic format such as AutoCAD or Alibre. Suggest design changes and improvements as necessary.
Fabricate and modify precision metal fixtures and components using hand tools and powered shop equipment. Will work with primarily aluminum, steel, and brass but occasionally with titanium or invar.
Operate and maintain powered shop equipment to include hand drills, drill press, belt grinder, band saw, cut off saw, lathe, three-axis milling machine, surface grinder and CNC machine.
Monitor safety conditions of shop and lab facilities and advise supervisor on deficiencies/problems. Conduct lab safety inspections as directed.
Qualifications:
One to two years of directly related advanced education from a technical or community college. Must have a hands-on attitude, possess excellent technical writing skills, possess strong analytical skills and have the ability to interface with a wide variety of technical personnel. Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks and adhere to strict time schedules.
Proficient in the operation of CNC equipment. Must be experienced in the use of measuring equipment, geometric dimensioning and work with hand sketches and engineering drawings; high speed machine programming and applications. Must be able to work in an R&D; environment on an independent basis; flexible and adaptable to changing technical specifications.
Must have a minimum of 10 years directly related experience working with flight hardware and 15 years experience working with mechanical systems and demonstrate a satisfactory history of working with precision hardware and components. Must have very good interpersonal skills and be able to work in confined spaces and clean rooms for an extended period of time. Must be familiar with a variety of field''s operations, practices, and procedures. Experience of working with assembly and detailed drawings is essential.
Must be capable of passing applicable physical examinations and successfully completing the following training (and other required training): Electro-static discharge, hazard communication/waste generator, clean room operations, Oxygen Hazards/Cryogenic Liquids, Critical Crane Operator/Physical (desired), Laser safety, personal protective equipment. Must also have the ability to interface effectively with co-workers and NASA personnel. Successful candidate must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to perform technical presentations.
NASA certifications are highly desirable such as clean room practices, ESD, Bonding & Potting, connector mate/demate, crane operation, Hydraset operation, torque practices, Hazcom and waste, fork lift and aerial lift.
Physical Requirements:
Will require a considerable amount of walking, sitting, standing, stooping and bending. Climbing will be minimal; however, daily trips up/down stairs will be required. Lifting may be required, but not more than 35 pounds. Good vision is required for gauging and inspecting components. Must also have good mobility and motor function for daily activities and equipment maintenance. Requires wearing personal protective equipment, working with computers, Multi-Tasking ability, oral and written communication skills, and organizational skills.
