PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research develops both germline-engineered and transplantation based murine cancer models, and employs them to evaluate potential therapeutic and diagnostic strategies for use in the clinic. The Center is engaged in several interdisciplinary collaborations involving multiple investigators and partnership organizations.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Research Associate II will be engaged in the validation, characterization, and preclinical evaluation of genetically engineered mouse models of cancer as a critical member of the Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. The Research Associate II will operate the histopathology laboratory and assist the dedicated CAPR veterinary pathologist with experiments aimed at the evaluation of anticancer therapeutics in genetically engineered mouse models, as well as orthotopic allograft and in vitro cell culture models. Duties include Imunohistochemistry/ Immunofluorescence method development and optimization, processing tissue to paraffin blocks with an automatic vacuum processor, microtomy, cryotomy, H & E staining, tissue trimming, decalcification of bones, B-gal staining of frozen sections, Aperio slide scanning and labeling in Spectrum database, general laboratory organization, cassette labeling, slide filing, and documentation of histopathology lab protocols. Will interface regularly with lead scientific staff to organize, coordinate and schedule processing of experimental samples. Includes the preparation of appropriate documentation of experiments in laboratory notebooks and in an online database. The CAPR histotechnologist will also assist the CAPR pathologist with image analysis using automated microscope scanning and analysis systems.
Qualifications
: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a biomedical field (ie: biology, biochemistry or genetics) or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree.
Foreign Degrees must be evaluated for US equivalency.
In addition to educational requirements, license/certification as a histotechnologist or histotechnician is required (HT or HTL).
Successful candidates will have at least five years of experience working in a histopathology lab with mouse tissues.
Requires learning and applying a variety of histopathological methods, maintaining accurate and detailed records, and working effectively in a team-oriented environment.
Extensive experience with optimization of immunohistochemistry/ immunofluorescence is required.
The Research Associate II will also be responsible for keeping computer records and maintaining data in computer-based applications/databases.
Complexity of mouse models and drug evaluation studies will require strong organizational skills as well as very detailed and accurate record keeping.
Ability to communicate with project lead researchers in a demanding scientific environment is essential.
The successful candidate is expected to have ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to adapt to frequent changes in project priorities, as well as be able to master novel technologies and instrumentation.
This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a histopathology laboratory that studies mouse models of cancer and cancer therapeutics is desired. Cancer biology experience preferred but not essential. Experience with using Aperio(TM) and/or Ariol(TM) slide scanner is also a significant benefit.
Experience with use of an automated IHC staining apparatus is desired.
Knowledge of microscopy, including fluorescence image acquisition and analysis will be considered a plus, as well as basic understanding of project management practices.
