Bureau Description:

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention works to prevent and reduce the impact of chronic diseases and disabling conditions by addressing associated modifiable risk factors.
Chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and asthma are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems in Florida and in the U.
S.
The Bureau develops, implements, and evaluates health promotion activities, primary and secondary prevention services, and community-based health interventions across the state.
The Bureau partners with state and local agencies, health systems, and community partners to encourage best practices statewide.
The Bureau also focuses on increasing health equity and promotes the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all program activities.
The Bureau supports community and state-level partnerships including activities that promote the Department s Healthiest Weight Florida initiative.
These partnerships ensure coordination and collaboration among and between stakeholders and providers to stimulate and support efficient and effective delivery of health care.

Responsibilities:

This is a highly responsible professional position reporting directly to the Chief, Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention.
This position involves advanced skills in planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on activities designed to reduce the burden of chronic diseases statewide.
This position oversees projects and directs the work of staff.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Responsible for all supervisory duties including, but not limited to, hiring and selection, developing performance plans, conducting performance appraisals, planning and directing staff work, approving leave, and taking disciplinary action as appropriate.

Administers and supervises the Environmental Approaches Section within the Bureau; guides staff in developing, completing, and evaluating program goals, strategies, and objectives.
Promotes making the healthy choice the easy choice through environmental and policy changes at birthing facilities, child care centers, schools, worksites, communities, and health care settings.

Maintains grant and fiscal accountability, responsible for assuring encumbrances related to assigned grant budget activities.

Represents the department on boards and councils and at meetings and conferences as needed; responds to assignments generated internally or externally, including legislative assignments, budget issue proposals, rule writing, etc.

Identifies opportunities to maximize efforts through coordination within the Bureau, within the Department, and with external partners.
Participates in inter- and intra-agency workgroups relating to health improvement through environmental approaches.
Works closely with other programs in the Department of Health, Department of Education, Department of Children and Families and other agencies as needed.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required by the Department, Division, or Bureau programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of program monitoring, coordination and evaluation techniques.
Knowledge of process improvement, quality assessment, managerial and leadership techniques.
Ability to plan and develop programs or program components.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships and interpersonal skills.

Possesses the following skills:
proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.


Qualifications:

Preferred candidate will possess a Master s degree in Public Health or similar field with at least two or more years of public health experience; have extensive experience and familiarity with disease prevention and health promotion programs, with an emphasis on chronic diseases; demonstrate high level of proficiency with state government management policies and procedures; effectively communicate in both written and verbal forms; work independently, prioritize and organize work assignments and work under pressure.
