The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to thirty (30) temporary positions at Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for extension if workload and funding allow. Mesa Verde National Park is the premier archeological park in the United States and a World Heritage Site. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings. The park has over 52,000 acres, 8,100 of which have been designated as wilderness. Mesa Verde is located in southwest Colorado near several towns including Cortez (10 miles from the entrance), Mancos (8 miles from the entrance) and Durango (36 miles from the entrance). All services, including a hospital, K-12 schools, grocery, recreation centers and more are available in the surrounding area. This area is also a hotbed for recreational enthusiasts. No matter which direction you travel from the park recreational opportunities exist including hiking, rafting/kayaking, biking and much more. The area is diverse ranging from high mountain wilderness to desert, all within a short drive of the park.
AT MESA VERDE THERE IS A RISK OF EXPOSURE TO WILDLIFE PATHOGENS TRANSMISSIBLE TO HUMANS SUCH AS HANTAVIRUS AND PLAGUE . While this risk is remote, some of the work sites may be infested with infected rodents and some work assignments may require the handling of live or dead animals; therefore, the possibility exists.
NOTE TO ALLERGY SUFFERERS : Mesa Verde contains a variety of both native and exotic species of grasses, trees and plants (i.e., sagebrush, pinion, juniper, Canada thistle, etc.) and other known allergens.

Serve as initial contact for park visitors working at Mesa Verde's Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and Visitor and Research Center. Research, prepare and present a wide variety of original theme-based interpretive programs to large and small audiences (up to 50 people). Programs may include guided cliff dwelling tours, evening Powerpoint programs, student education tours and guided walks. The foundation of all presentations is based on the Ancestral Pueblo prehistoric culture (AD 500 to 1300). Apply interpretive tools, techniques and principles that engage the public so that each person can connect with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of the park. Staff a variety of visitor contact areas including self-guided cliff dwellings; answer repetitive questions and provide one-on-one interpretation and protect cultural resources; perform roving interpretation throughout the park at varied points of visitor interest; answer the telephone and provide area information or take messages; mail information packets upon request. Attend two weeks of resource and interpretive training then immediately present programs to the public. Positions will be hired on a full-time work schedule and may be changed to part-time or intermittent throughout the appointment depending on management needs. Park-time and intermittent work schedules may be available depending on management needs. An intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Work a duty schedule that involves teamwork, timeliness, rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays; conduct opening and closing procedures for a variety of visitor facilities and archeological sites.
This position requires climbing ladders and crawling on hands and knees through a tunnel on a daily basis. Our largest ladder is 32 feet in height; the tunnel is rocky and requires getting on hands and knees and is 12 feet in length.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Special Working Conditions: Strenuous physical activity, extended periods of standing, hiking at minimum 1/4-mile and up to 4 miles per day; exposure to heights (cliff edges), climbing stone steps and ladders (highest ladder is 32 feet) and crawling through a 12 foot long by 18 inch wide tunnel.
Work at high elevation (from 7,000 to 8,500 feet) in harsh weather extremes that may include hot, arid and dusty conditions in Summer and cold, snowy, windy conditions in Spring and Autumn.
Summer day time highs average 80 degrees but there can be spikes in temperatures that can extend into the 90s; cliff dwelling tours may involve temperatures exceeding 90 degrees; afternoon lightning and thunderstorms are possible.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify.
_For the GS-05 grade level:_
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. -OR-B . A 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. -OR- C . Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

Participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program - Employees on temporary appointments, seasonal schedules who will be working a schedule of less than six months per year, and intermittent employees who are expected to work 130 hours per month or more for at least 90 days will be eligible to enroll in an FEHB plan. Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which is deducted from bi-weekly earnings. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
