Position Profile The Chief Dispatcher insures the safe and efficient movement of trains by supervising Rail Traffic Controllers (Train Dispatchers) and based on his or her knowledge of customers and their needs as well as operational knowledge of trains and crews and:
Number of cars scheduled
Number of engines
Other railroads and passenger trains in the area
Maintaining crews on the tracks

Chief Dispatchers are responsible for:

Directing train traffic efficiently according to the CN guidlines on the assigned territory

Issuing Track warrants to train crews and track crews, and planning work blocks accordingly

Coordinating transportation and maintenance crews in order to have safe movement of trains and providing crews enough time to repair track

Having knowledge of Operating Rules to ensure compliance for train crews, road crews, trainmasters and superintendents

Calculating running times of trains between stations to arrange meet and passes at the correct locations

Resolving situations with the help of appropriate departments
Other job requirements include:

Computer and two-way radio skills

Arithmetic skills

Good communication skills

Working shifts, sometimes away from home

Physical work, sometime in extreme weather conditions
This position is subject to overtime and being on call evenings, weekends and holidays.
