This is a flexible (0.0) FTE position. Schedule will be variable as needed. Salary range for this position is $21.21 to $28.42/hour. This position is located in downtown Portland.
Functions/Duties of Position
This position provides support to the Enterprise Coding Department for billing of Outpatient facility (Medicare Part B) and/or facility fees (Medicare Part A). This position is responsible for reviewing documentation to make sure the documentation supports the levels or types of service billed and to ensure the documentation is in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid billing regulations and documentation guidelines, CPT documentation guidelines, PATH and OPPS guidelines. Responsible for meeting performance standards set for accurate and timely submission of charges for physician and/or facility services rendered at OHSU. Provide technical expertise regarding a broad range of third party payer and reimbursement issues, working in collaboration with billing departments. Educate physicians on billing and coding practices and advise physicians and their departments of coding changes or changes in regulations. May require some travel to Portland area sites. Coding assignment will vary based on business needs or management assignment.

REQUIRED:
Two years of hospital or professional services (dependent on job) experience reviewing, abstracting, and coding medical records using ICD-9-CM and CPT coding; OR
Completion of Medical Records Coding course through an accredited college or
university OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training
Certification in one of the following (as indicated by the position description) may be required upon hire or within one year of employment:
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Active AHIMA membership may be required for some positions. Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders.
Knowledge of CPT, ICD-9-CM, HCPCS, Federal Register, Federal and State insurance billing laws and Mandates. Proficiency with word processing and Excel spreadsheets.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels, physicians, nurses, administrative management, etc.
Ability to work as a team player. Member of the American Academy of Professional Coders and Certified Professional Coder or AHIMA certification required upon hire.
CPC or AHIMA certification required
PREFERRED:
High School diploma or GED
Minimum 2-3 years professional or hospital facility coding using CPT, ICD-9CM, ICD-9 Procedure Coding.
Some college course work or education in classes related to anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, CPT and ICD-9-CM coding.
Knowledge of OPPS guidelines and CPT Outpatient coding guidelines. CCI edits and familiarity with medical necessity guidelines. Experience using an EMR.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Monday-Friday, 8-4:30 (with some flexibility available).
Telecommuting is available to qualified individuals.
