The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center is recruiting for one full-time Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPC). Licensure at the national and/or state level are required for this position.
The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPC) works as a member of the Substance Use and PTSD (SUPT) interdisciplinary team and provides evidenced-based and other expert clinical services to Veterans with trauma- and stressor-related, substance-related and addictive, mood, anxiety, adjustment, and other co-occurring psychiatric disorders or conditions.
Clinical duties include: screening high risk Veterans, expert evaluations for diagnosis and treatment planning, and providing a full range of psychological interventions, including motivational enhancement and evidenced based psychotherapies (EBPs) for the disorders and conditions described above. The primary form of service delivery involves direct Veteran contact using individual, group, and telephone based modalities. The LPC may participate in team and service level efforts related to quality assurance program measurements within the SUPT section of the Addictive Disorders Treatment Program in Psychology Service.The LPC will participate in all Mental Health and Psychology Service functions asrequired, including consultations with others and interaction in trainings and staff meetings.This position may require some evening and/or weekend duties.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Some nights and weekends are required to meet mission demands)

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. Citizenship . Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education . A master's degree in mental health counseling, or a related field, from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Examples of related mental health counseling fields include, but are not limited to, Addiction Counseling; Community Counseling; Gerontology Counseling; Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling; and Marriage and Family Therapy. A doctoral degree in mental health counseling may not be substituted for the master's degree in mental health counseling
Licensure . Persons hired or reassigned to LPMHC positions in the GS-101 series in VHA must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice mental health counseling, which includes diagnosis and treatment.
Physical Requirements. A physical will be required for this position.
English Language Proficiency . LPMHC''s must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy.

_GRADE REQUIREMENTS:_
(1) Creditable Experience
(a) Current Professional Counseling Practice . To be creditable, the experience must post-licensure and must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with current professional counseling practice. Creditable post-licensure experience can be obtained through employment as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor. This may be evidenced by one or both of the following:
professional practice. Active professional practice means paid/non-paid employment as a Licensed professional Mental Health Counselor.
2.A full, current, and unrestricted license.
Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it is post-licensure experience as a professional mental health counselor directly related to the duties to be performed. Qualifying experience must also be at a level comparable to professional counseling experience at the next lower level.
GS-11 Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor
(a) Experience, Education and Licensure . In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must have at least 1 year of post-master's degree mental health counseling experience.
In addition to the basic requirements, a doctoral degree in mental health counseling, or a related field may be substituted for the required 1 year of professional mental health counseling experience.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to engage in information gathering, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and follow-up.
2. Knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders in formulation of treatment goals and application of appropriate clinical interventions using professional counseling practices.
3. Basic knowledge of professional counseling practice with emphasis on human development principles through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic interventions, and strategies that address high risk behaviors, wellness, personal growth, and career development across the life span.
4. Ability to use a wide variety of individual and group counseling interventions; demonstrates sensitivity to diversity and possesses multicultural counseling skills.
5. Ability to serve on an interdisciplinary team with focus on the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and relational functioning of individuals, groups and families and on the counseling approaches, strategies, and techniques that will best help patients function effectively.
6. Basic skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, maintaining accurate, timely and thorough clinical documentation and delivery of services.
7. Knowledge and understanding of existing relevant statutes, case laws, ethical codes, and regulations affecting professional practice of counseling.
8. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.
Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselors diagnose and treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities. Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapies. They consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of Veteran care issues. Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselors may also be involved in program evaluation and/or research activities.
