Job Details: The Dispensing Optician works with doctors, assistants, technicians, managers, and other department personnel to provide professional eyeglasses dispensing services. Designs vision correction devices to meet the visual, cosmetic, and lifestyle needs of the patients. Often works independent of doctor''s supervision or instruction.
Education/Learning
Experience:
- Required: High school diploma or equivalency.
- Desired: Vocational school optician program graduate. Some post-secondary course work in Business, Communication, or health related field.
Work
Experience:
- Required: 1-3 years as dispensing optician in optometric or ophthalmic practice or customer service related position.
- Desired: Experience as dispensing optician, fitting patients after cataract surgery, eye disease and/or injury. Experience fitting specialty lenses such as slab-off prisms and double segment multifocals.
Skills/Knowledge:
- Required: Strong interpersonal and patient service skills. Ability to work as a team member. Ability to contribute to the profitability of vision center/dispensary through professional presentation of premium products. Thorough knowledge of ophthalmic frames and lenses.
- Desired: Computer, especially Compulink Eyecare Advantage, spreadsheets, email, word processing. Knowledge of specialty products such as slab off/on prisms, aspheric surface lenses, prism thinning, etc.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Required: American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification within eighteen months of employment.
- Desired: American Board of Opticianry Master (ABOM) certification.
