Departmental Overview
The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) is a hub for research on global economic development, with a network of over 75 academic researchers extending across the University of California, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. Our faculty affiliates design and test solutions for the problems of poverty, generating actionable evidence for policy-makers in less developed countries. Using rigorous field trials, behavioral experiments, and tools from data science, we measure and maximize the impacts of economic development programs throughout the world.
Responsibilities
CEGA seeks a motivated Associate to support the Center's Faculty Director, Ted Miguel, as well as programs implemented by the Center's Global Networks team (in particular, the Working Group in African Political Economy). The Associate will provide critical administrative support including general research assistance, events management, and outreach/communications, while contributing to Center-wide process improvements and performance management. This is a challenging opportunity for an early-career professional who is passionate about global development and social science research; has a strong desire to expand and deepen his or her skills in research administration, project planning, and partnership development; and is energized to contribute to the long-term success of a dynamic organization.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Oversee the Faculty Director's calendar and travel, including scheduling, purchasing tickets/hotel, maintenance of travel calendars, coordinating meeting logistics, and processing of reimbursements.
Manage grant and departmental budgets, including a complex mix of campus, grant, contract, and gift funds.
Support the administration and expansion of select CEGA and faculty research initiatives, including the Working Group in African Political Economy (WGAPE), by carrying out library research; supporting partnership development; composing concept notes; drafting proposals, budgets, and grant reports to funders; synthesizing relevant research; conducting data work; and performing analysis on a variety of policies, projects, and programs.
Work with faculty and staff to support research projects carried out in developing countries by providing assistance with subawards/other agreements, including: compiling required documentation, drafting scopes of work, monitoring sub-awards to field partners, managing payments/invoicing, and ensuring adherence to regulations/processes, human subjects protection compliance, and periodic reporting.
Support faculty, post docs, graduate students, and external vendors by interfacing in an appropriate manner with Campus Shared Services, UC Berkeley's finance and administration division.
Advertise Graduate Student Researcher positions for the Faculty Director or CEGA, accept and acknowledge applications, make preliminary decisions regarding fit and eligibility, and coordinate hiring process for graduate students each semester or as appropriate.
Manage communications for the Faculty Director including writing content for his website, making editorial decisions, and posting content to feature items of strategic importance to the Director and CEGA.
Organize periodic special events, including oversight of logistics and budgeting, calls for nominations/papers, communications, and reimbursements.
Oversee the use of key facilities, including maintenance of schedules for guest offices and conference rooms, and space availability for students and post-docs within CEGA and Economics Department space.
Participate in center-wide activities, including maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs), process documentation, internal work groups, and performance management.
Required Qualifications
Requires a BA/BS in Economics, Business, International Relations, Public Health or related field;
1-3 years of relevant professional experience;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Self-directed, intrinsically motivated; proven capacity to manage work independently, multitask and be responsive to time-sensitive deadlines.
Well-organized, with strong administrative skills and outstanding attention to detail.
Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-anticipation and -solving, and customer service; ability to independently investigate solutions to administrative challenges and anticipate leadership needs.
Strong and effective interpersonal skills in working with colleagues at all levels. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work diplomatically with diverse constituencies.
Ability to contribute to remaining flexible and able to adapt to change.
Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations, such as budget creation, financial forecasting, managing calendars, hiring graduate and undergraduate students.
Strong competency with MS Office (including solid understanding of Excel) and Google applications.
Preferred Qualifications
Coursework in quantitative research methods
Experience with or ability to learn statistical software such as STATA or R;
Working knowledge of limited UC policy and procedures or capacity to acquire it rapidly;
Experience using UC Berkeley's BearBuy procurement software (preferred);
Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality;
Sense of humor with a positive attitude in approaching challenges and uncertainty;
Experience and strong interest in global development issues.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
