Summary:
The Unit Secretary provides general clerical support to the departmental manager, staff, physicians, and patients in accordance with established guidelines and procedures, such as Meditech entry, filing, and the answering of telephones & call lights. Normally receives general instructions on all assignments and in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices of Valley Presbyterian Hospital. These services further the mission of Valley Presbyterian Hospital, which is to provide high quality, cost effective healthcare for the people in the communities we serve.
EXPERIENCE/
Qualifications:
Prior secretarial training and/or experience in the health care setting preferred.
EDUCATION:
Basic arithmetic, reading, and writing skills. High School equivalent or related work experience preferred.
LICENSURES/CERTIFICATION:
Must successfully complete and maintain LA County Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Must demonstrate technical competence, professional clinical judgment, communication skills and sensitivity for the patient and families. Typing/word-processing skills helpful. Prior experience in clerical/general office, including filing, sorting, records maintenance, and chart sorting preferred. Strong customer service skills required to communicate with patients, departmental internal/external clients, staff, and physicians. Basic knowledge of software used by the department preferred. Must possess the ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects, use time management skills, problems solve. Able to work independently as well as part of a team in the health care setting. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.

Participates in all departmental specific training, Environment of Care (injury/illness prevention, fire/life safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, utilities management, medical equipment management, safety and security management), infection control (standard precautions, TB Exposure Control Plan, Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan).
Demonstrates knowledge of and follows safety practices.
Understands the importance of safety, including patient safety in the work place.
Maintains a safe environment for self and others.
Actively participates in the Patient Safety Program, including event reporting. Identifies sentinel events/near misses and responds per defined organization processes.
Participates in education activities and process implementation.
Demonstrates advocacy for the patient/customer and appropriately acknowledges patients, customers and visitors.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
