Clinic Assistant - Dana-Farber Community Cancer Care (Weymouth)
Overview
The Clinical Assistant is responsible for direct care provided to patients and for contributing to efficient operations in the patient care environment. Direct patient care activities include but are not limited to obtaining vital signs, obtaining blood specimens, meeting the comfort needs of patients, and assisting nursing and medical staff in the examination and treatment of patients including performing invasive procedures, such as bone marrow aspirates. Indirect patient care activities include those that support clinic operations such as ordering and stocking clinical supplies and patient education materials, cleaning patient care areas and infusion room, transporting patients and specimens as needed, and monitoring the environment of care.

Delivers direct patient care
Greets patients and families promptly in a welcoming and courteous manner.
Follows DFCI policy when treating and greeting patients by verbally confirming patients' two identifiers.
Responds promptly and courteously to requests for assistance by patients, families, visitors and staff.
Provides clear and accurate information.
Performs phlebotomy and obtains specimens (urine, stool, sputum, etc.) and/or instructs patients/family members in collecting specimens
Assists patients as needed responding to special needs such as wheelchairs, etc.
Assists patients with comfort and safety.
Obtains and records vital signs, pain screen, weights, and heights accurately in OncoEMR. Reports changes and/or abnormalities in vital signs, unusual findings and changes in patient's conditions to the nursing/medical staff in a timely manner.
Assists nursing and medical staff with procedures as requested. Obtains vital signs before and after each procedure and gathers appropriate paperwork.
Assists with patient care needs in the infusion room (obtaining vital signs, meeting patient comfort needs, patient transportation, cleaning equipment and patient care areas).
Collaborates with the nursing and medical staff in preparing the patient and family for procedures and treatments through verbal explanation, emotional support and sharing educational materials.
Demonstrates proficiency in technical skills, e.g., phlebotomy, (adapting technique as necessary for various age groups).
Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS certification.
Performs activities related to efficient clinic operations and patient flow
Assists with direct patient care procedures and related tasks; checks in patients, assists in obtaining patient histories, takes vital signs, prepares charts, confirms that all ordered tests and procedures from previous visits have results and records scanned into the patient's chart and assists with medical examinations. Performs clerical functions related to medical activities.
Transports patients, specimens, equipment and supplies in accordance with policy.
Manages room assignments in order to maintain patient flow. Ability to strategize the day's workload and make recommendations to doctors and others accordingly. Have ability to manage walk-in patients and wait times when assigning rooms. Partners with MD's, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and other clinic assistants to discuss assignments room flow.
Assures that all clinical areas have an adequate stock of medical supplies, equipment, and patient education materials. Obtains and orders supplies and equipment when needed.
Assures that supplies are adequate, and equipment is in proper working order. Monitors for safety, cleanliness and expiration dates on a daily basis. Ensures supplies are fully stocked throughout the day.
Cleans and maintains medical equipment, infusion chairs between patients. Cleans exam tables at end of day. Restocks exam room to prepare for next day. Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment, supplies, or patient care areas that require cleaning or repairs.
Packaging of sharps containers and chemotherapy waste.
Utilizes OncoEMR to identify patients that require Infection Control precautions and take appropriate steps. Informs providers and staff of such patients by monitoring patient assignments.
Locks all work rooms and medical supplies according to DFCI policy.
Utilizes electronic medical record to record vital signs
Maintains working knowledge of DFCI intranet including accessing policies and procedures, the Help Desk, and DFCI staff contact information
Understands and utilizes provider notification system (paging, text pages, email) appropriately.
Directs patients to appropriate waiting areas, exam rooms, and other patient care areas.
Labels and transports specimens per policy.
Works collaboratively with unit leadership to determine repair needs of equipment and/or future equipment needs of the unit.

Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team

Adheres to DFCI policies regarding confidentiality and HIPAA
Dresses appropriately for assigned work.
Uses proper body mechanics.
Demonstrates cost-effective use of supplies and equipment.
Attends mandatory training and education sessions. Takes initiative to become familiar with manuals on fire, disaster, infection control and department specific procedures.
Meets annual evaluation requirements and competencies within the established time period. Submits written documentation at the time of the annual evaluation.
Qualifications
MINIMUM JOB
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of a nursing assistant certification program, (CNA) or medical assistant program.
College coursework preferred.
Three years of experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting and/or national phlebotomy certification
Demonstrated expertise at procedural duties for the assigned unit/specific area as well as the skill to critical think of how procedural flow impacts operations.
Phlebotomy skills or willingness to learn
