Devops Engineer
Looking for someone who has Web Server experience (preferably public facing, high traffic, and high avail (24/7)). Experience with Apache, Tomcat, DNS (exp. updating), SSL (obtaining certificates), and/or Load Balancing.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Senior Development Operations Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting the systems and services provided by the Web Hosting and Content Security group, whose core mission is to provide secure web-hosting services and technical leadership to the company's businesses. This position provides technical expertise and direction in the design, development, and support of internet-facing server infrastructure.
Job Responsibilities
Operational Responsibilities 35%
o Serve as subject-matter expert in topics related to web hosting architecture, such as server tuning, performance analysis, scaling, SSL, local and global load balancing, caching, and troubleshooting.
o Recommend web hosting architectures and design web hosting solutions
o Provide and maintain support for Internet/Intranet application environments, including application deployment, DNS, Apache and Tomcat configuration, load balancer configuration, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.
o Monitor resource usage, plan resource capacity, including diverting traffic as required through content delivery networks such as Limelight, Level-3, and others, or to overflow server environments (i.e. cloud).
o Oversee and address escalated issues from first-level support team and lead group-troubleshooting sessions.
o Develop, maintain, review and approve documentation in accordance with group procedures.
o Develop and maintain custom internal tools and scripts to automate the management of servers and systems.
Project Responsibilities 35%
o Participate in prioritizing, coordinating, planning, executing, and closing projects and tasks to produce the required deliverables.
o Research product and technical data in order to recommend products, technologies, and processes for ongoing projects
o Act as a mentor for other team members.
o Lead group-brainstorming sessions.
o Plan and execute application and content serving solutions by configuring, managing, and troubleshooting web servers, middleware, and related applications.
Communication 25%
o Keep operations/project team well informed of changes regarding status of assigned tasks
o Create and deliver presentations to Web Hosting team and management
o Communicate with clients regarding maintenance, incidents, and projects l2
Perform other duties as assigned 5%
JOB QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
Work Experience
o Experience with support for high-availability servers, particularly web servers is required.
o 5
years experience in a web serving or systems administrator role in a diverse environment is required.
Education, Professional Training, Technical Training or Certification
o BS Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent experience)
Knowledge/Skills
o Proficiency with the Internet (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS, FTP, SSH, SSL, etc.).
o Solid understanding of UNIX system administration, particularly Linux, including security, compilation, and installation of third-party software and networking (DNS, NFS, TCP/IP).
o Experience with shell scripting, PHP, Python.
o Significant experience with the configuration and management of the following software: Apache 2 (httpd), Tomcat, MySQL, BIND, including performance tuning.
o Experience with the following is a plus: Information Security, Software Engineering, Java middleware (particularly Glassfish), database management software (Oracle, MySQL), Sendmail, LDAP, SVN, Git, Wordpress.
Other Requirements
o Must possess excellent problem solving skills.
o Must be a self-starter as well as work in a group project environment.
o Must be able to prepare and maintain technical documentation.
o Must be able to organize and schedule a high workload efficiently.
o Must be able to communicate effectively with others (staff, management, vendors, etc.).
o Must be willing to wear a pager for off-hour problems/requests.
o Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends.
