General Summary
The medical Dosimetrist produces an external beam treatment plan for patients, with alternatives if necessary, either by use of is dose charts or by use of a treatment planning computer. The Dosimetrist calculates dosage for interstitial, intracavitary or other brachytherapy procedures using radioactive materials. The Dosimetrist may be required to supervise the initial treatment set-up, train others in dosimetry and has the ability to manufacture beam-shaping blocks, filters, or other treatment aids. This position may be assigned to or cover any FHMMC sites.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
Discusses the patient's diagnosis and treatment planning options with the Radiation Oncologist
May assist in the simulation procedure when required. Determines that all data is collected for planning purposes
Prepares contours and assists in CT localization for planning purposes
Outlines critical organ structures on CT
Assists in preparation of immobilization devices and/or treatment aids (i.e. casts, bolus, etc.)
Uses treatment planning computer to produce a treatment plan(s) for the patients that are acceptable to the Radiation Oncologists
Translates treatment plan information accurately into the daily treatment information
Accurately calculates monitor units for individual fields
Supervises or prepares daily set-up data relating to dose, daily dose per field, wedges, etc
Supervises or accomplishes planning for special procedures, i.e. skin compensating filters, construction of wedge filters, field gap calculations
Responsible for in-vivo dosimetry data retrieval and charges
Completes treatment plans accurately and on time
Prepares final dosage calculations for brachytherapy/HDR procedures
Prepares final dosage distribution summary for the Radiation Oncologist
Works with the medical physicist in the ordering and receipt of therapeutic radioactive materials
Performs chart reviews or double checks as directed by the supervisor
Detects and reports erratic performance of equipment
Maintains radiation protection standards for patients, employees, and self during exposures as outlines in the State of Florida Control of Radiation Hazard Regulations
Assists in practical research problems involving dosimetry
Assist the radiation oncologist and/or medical physicist in patient room preparation, loading and unloading of sources
Assist the radiation oncologist and/or the medical physicist in conducting patient room surveys
May be responsible for assessing quality control and assisting in accurate beam alignment of patient set-ups
Assists the medical physicist in other quality assurance procedures
Responsible for preparing reports requested by the Department
What will you need?
Completion of a formal course in Radiation Therapy Technology followed by on-the-job training of one year, or a B.S. in a basic science, or a formal course in Medical Dosimetry
CPR required
Computer proficiency
Certification by the Medical Dosimetry Board (preferred)
