MedSurg RN (Nights)
I General Summary The Staff Nurse is a professional Registered Nurse who is accountable for the delivery of patient care.
This includes assessing, coordinating and participating in total care and teaching for a specific patient population.
The RN oversees all care provided by the LPN and CNA.
Care is delivered in collaboration with the patient and family members, physicians, peers, and other members of the health care team.
The staff nurse provides the leadership in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
II Principal Responsibilities and Duties Staff treat patients of adult and geriatric age groups and are knowledgeable about developmental needs over the age span and, where appropriate, incorporates findings into individualized care planning, and are knowledgeable about the use of age-related equipment.
Maintains the Standards of Patient Care and implements the Policies and Procedures of York Hospital and functions with in the scope of the Maine Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code of Ethics , and Hospital Nursing Scope of Practice.
Understands and functions in the collaborative practice model:
a.
Communicates effectively with physicians, members of the interdisciplinary health care team, patients, and families to assess, develop, and carry out the comprehensive plan of care; b.
Works with physician to develop and carry out the medical plan of care; and c.
Assists peers in the delivery of patient care and acts as a resource person when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.
Provides comprehensive patient care:
A.
Utilizes the 5-step Nursing process (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Intervention, Evaluation) 1.
Assesses the patient's physical condition and related care needs, social situation, need for intervention, knowledge base ability to learn, collaborates with patient to set appropriate short and long term goals.
2.
Assesses, initiates, and/or assists with emergency measures for apparent or sudden adverse developments in patients.
3.
Works collaboratively with health care team, patient, and family to develop, and implement a plan of care appropriate to established goals.
4.
Develops a teaching plan and uses every opportunity to provide patient /family information promoting health restoration and maintenance.
5.
Administers medication in a timely manner and treatments according to plan and evaluates their effectiveness.
B.
Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person (ie:
physicians, Social Worker, Utilization Review, Dietician, etc.
) and documents those observations accurately and concisely.
C.
Uses time and resources effectively in the delivery of patient care.
D.
Promotes and practices the established standards for safety and infection control.
E.
Acts as a patient/family advocate.
F.
Participates actively for improvement of nursing practice and professional development:
1.
Participates in committees or Path based activities; 2.
Establishes and pursues individual professional goals; 3.
Participates in professional development of peers; 4.
Acts as professional role model in all aspects of performance; and 5.
Participates in ongoing evaluation of quality care.

IV Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A.
Knowledge of nursing theory and practice as acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing; B.
Knowledge of the primary nurse model; C.
Knowledge of collaborative practice including Nursing Scope of Practice; D.
Knowledge of infection control issues and universal precautions; E.
Completion of IV Certification.
Demonstrates required skills as established by the hospital standards:
IV therapy, medication administration, sterile technique, etc.
; and F.
Maintains all mandatory requirements including but not limited to BLS, Safety test annually, Competency assessment, PPD, annual evaluation.
V Education and Experience Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Maine.
Completion of hospital's orientation program.
VI Comments Exposure to hazardous materials, and risk of contracting communicable diseases.
