Track Foreman
Supervises activities of workers engaged in the installation and repair of railroad track on specified territory. Installs and repairs railroad track on specified territory of railroad, using portable grinder, spike puller, spike driver, and tie adz, to grind ends of rails, removes old spikes, drives new spikes, cuts ties to fit fishplates, and performs related maintenance. This is accomplished by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as requested or required.
1. Supervises and works in conjunction with Director of Track to schedule activities of workers engaged in the installation and repair of railroad track on specified territory.
2. Operates single- or multiple-head spike puller to pull old spikes from tie.
3. Raises rail, using hydraulic jack, to facilitate removal of old tie and installation of new tie.
4. Operates tie-adzing machine to cut portion of tie so that tie plate can be inserted to hold rail.
5. Drills holes through rails, tie plates, and fishplates for insertion of bolts and spike, using power drill.
6. Operates single- or multiple-head spike driving machine to drive spike into tie and secure rail.
7. Operates track-wrench machine to tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends of rails together.
8. Operates rail saw to cut rails to specified lengths.
9. Operates portable grinder to grind worn ends of rails.
10. Sprays ties, fishplates, and joints with oil to protect them from weather.
11. Paints railroad signs, such as speed limits and gate-crossing warnings.
12. Drives company vehicles.
13. Performs other duties as requested or required.
Job Requirements
Education/
Experience:
High school education or general education development (GED); and 1 to 3 months job-related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates and Licenses:
None required. However, the employee in this job must be able to pass Railroad Operating and Safety Rules Test.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skills in using hand tools, including wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc.
Knowledge of and skills in using power tools and hydraulic equipment, including portable grinders, rail saws, tie-adzing machines, spike pullers, single- or multiple head spike drivers, track wrench machines, power drills.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to pass Railroad Operating and Safety Rules Test.
Ability to talk and hear well enough to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, yard workers, section leaders.
Ability to see well enough to read operating and maintenance instructions, gauges and dials on precision measuring tools.
Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, test materials, drawings, schematics, and procedure manuals.
Ability to apply concepts of basic shop math, calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, length, distance, and volume.
Ability to write legibly to complete routine reports, and complete required testing.
Ability to acquire and maintain a valid drivers' license to operate company vehicles.
