HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN
Department Name GENERAL CHEMISTRY Job Description POSITION SUMMARYTo prepare the laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist through the use of microtomy, special training, histochemistry and other appropriate techniques.
Nonexempt (Hourly - Eligible for overtime)MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSWork experience may substitute for minimum education requirement.
Associate's degree in Science related field preferred and one (1) year of related experience required.
CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLSAdheres to established turn-around times on both frozen sections and routine specimens.
Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
Maintains work area by cleaning benches, re-stocking supplies and notifying supervisor of low stock.
Assists with the orientation of new histology lab employees.
Troubleshoots equipment, reagents or procedural technique when problems occur.
Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
Performs maintenance on equipment routinely used in specimen preparation.
Ensures that supplies are sufficient for on-going testing.
Notifies supervisor if not.
Prepares specimen using the appropriate technique required to produce an acceptable sample for evaluation by the pathologist.
Follows established procedures for histology quality control and reports discrepancies to the histology supervisor.
