General Function:
Perform laboratory functions including qualitative and quantitative analyses, diagnostic testing and interpretation of results.
Characteristic Duties and
Responsibilities:
1) Evaluate sample integrity and aseptically prepare for analysis
2) Perform a variety of quantitative tests in accordance with prescribed methodology
3) Perform a variety of qualitative testing in accordance with prescribed methodology
4) Accurately quantify a large variety of food borne microorganisms
5) Perform verifications effectively and consistently
6) Perform microorganism identification as necessary
7) Document appropriate actions and information as required
8) Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and perform rapid assays as necessary
9) Perform routine housekeeping functions as scheduled
10) Read and record test results, evaluate analytical integrity and report findings, evaluate client specific requirements have been met
11) Practice GLP
12) Additional duties as assigned
Reporting Relationships:
Reports To: Reports to Diagnostic Supervisor
Direction Given: Assist in employee orientation and training in all aspects of laboratory operation
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Biology, Food Science or related field and one year of laboratory experience or five years of laboratory experience concentrated in diagnostic work and data interpretation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Desirable Traits:
Overall knowledge of Food Microbiology including test methodologies, GLPs and the implication of test results to clients. Organizational skills and the ability to think on your feet plus the desire to be a productive team member who exhibits until the job is done is essential. Must exhibit a strict attention to detail in everyday tasks. Must have the capability to make sound and independent decisions whenever necessary. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Working Conditions:
Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting. Some exposure to unpleasant elements. Some element of personal risk due to handling bacteria, chemicals, steam and heat.
