Histopathology Technician
This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), in the Veterans Integrated Service Network 6 (VISN 6), at the Salem VA Medical Center (VAMC in Virginia.
This position serves as the practical Histopathology Technician (HT), preparing photomicrographs for educational seminars and conferences and assisting in providing service in anatomic pathology under the direction and supervision of the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Anatomical Pathology Supervisor.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
o Manage all daily histology functions and maintain regulatory complianceo Oversee and implement special immunohistochemical procedures using enzymatic methodologieso Process surgical, bone marrow, post mortem and cytologic specimenso Process tissues to remove calcium deposits; embed tissue; and prepare smears, cell blocks, and monolayers according to standard techniques and applying appropriate stainso Prepare the tissue with appropriate preservative; evaluate specimen type, method, and changes; and determine the correct handling procedureso Investigate, evaluate, and establish quality control materials of all the results of all testingo Oversee the operation and maintenance of all equipmento Research and adapt procedures used in the departmento Ascertain correct label and appropriate request information of specimenso Assist Pathologist with grossing of tissues and autopsyo Maintain supply inventory on items used in the Histopathology Sectiono Utilize recording systems and maintain filing systemo Train other health care workers about Anatomical Pathology specimen collectiono Participate in the development of histological protocols under the supervisiono Assist the supervisor in the collection and interpretation of data for Anatomic Pathology QA programso Participate in the orientation and training of new employees in Anatomic Pathology section Work Schedule:
