Supervisory Accountant

The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) Salem, VA.
Position services as a Supervisory Accountant providing direction and oversight for a variety of accounting and auditing functions within the Accounting Section, Centralized Finance Service (CFS) for VISN's 5 and 6.
The work includes designing, developing, operating, or inspecting accounting systems; prescribing accounting standards, policies, and requirements; examining, analyzing, and interpreting accounting data, records, and reports; or advising or assisting management on accounting and financial management matters.
Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provides daily assurance, advice, and training on technical, policy, procedure, and accounting processing matters to staff located both remotely at the VISN 6 and DC VA Medical Center sites which are serviced by the CFS and to local CFS Accounting staff.
Ensures established policies are followed accurately and timely for the processing of medical centers' accounting actions which interface through or impact the CFS.
Ensures funds are efficiently and effectively controlled and that reports accurately reflect results of financial operations.
Is the subject matter expert in the field and remains current and aware of potential and upcoming changes in the finance area.
Performs duties associated with examining financial reporting, cash management, and internal controls.
Advises on and/or performs professional financial accounting duties.
Develops accounting procedures and resolves technical problems in executing a computerized integrated accounting system.
Serves as a professional accountant administering accounting systems for the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA).
Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit and ensures coordination of work among a variety of independent units to achieve the mission of the VISN.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
