The Geographic Information Science & Technology(GIST) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified research scientists in the field of geospatial image analysis research and development. Job Duties and
Responsibilities: The function of this position is to pursue research and development within the field of geographic information science, with special emphasis in one or more of the following areas:
Computer vision and machine learning for large geospatial data
High performance geospatial computing
Spatiotemporal data mining, modeling, and visualization
Applications of remote sensing in urban science

Responsibilities: The qualified candidates will work on challenging research problems utilizing geospatial image analysis and modeling. This position requires extensive understanding of methodologies and practices used in computer vision, machine learning and remote sensing data analysis research. The work involves developing, adapting and porting image analysis algorithms to various computing architectures. Results from the basic research and the application to real-world problems will be published in professional journals and presented to the scientific community. Candidates are expected to interact and coordinate with national and international experts in the GI Science field to keep ORNL on the forefront of the geospatial sciences as well as assist in research program development and implementation.
Qualifications Required:
Ph.D. in natural sciences, geography, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, along with a minimum of 2 or more years experience in one or more of the following areas: geographic information science, remote sensing, geographic information systems, spatial modeling, statistics, or visualization are required.
Strong experience and expertise in machine learning and computer vision techniques for design and use of one or more of the following are required: GIS and imaging systems, GIS and remote sensing theory techniques and application, Computational methods and spatial algorithms, Data management, Visualization, Geospatial modeling.
Strong programming experience with C/ C+
is required.
Excellent communication and decision-making skills, strong interpersonal skills and working effectively as a team member are essential.
Understanding and experience with emerging geocomputation architectures strongly desired.
Experience with CUDA and GPU programming preferred.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
