Supervisory Medical Technologist

Incumbent serves as a supervisor in a designated area of the laboratory with the primary responsibility for providing direction to non-testing personnel, such as medical technicians, aides, and health care technicians in specimen collection, specimen processing and accessioning, and quality control activities of the section.
Employees in this assignment perform the full range of supervisory duties for one or more sections of the laboratory, including responsibility for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointment, awards, advancement, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; identification of continuing education and training needs.
The individual assures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements; establishes and monitors the quality of the pre-analytical processes as part of the overall laboratory quality management program, and assures corrective action is initiated as needed.
The supervisor assures orientation and competency of assigned staff.
Duties/Tasks:
o Plans and schedules on-going work in the specimen collection and processing area.
Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures.
o Chooses methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies.
o Day-to-day supervision of highly complex test performance.
o Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance.
o Assures corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications.
o Assures orientation, training, and competency assessment of staff.
o Implements and monitors quality management activities.
o Performs the full range of supervisory duties.
Recommends appointment, plans and assigns work, gives advice and counsel, and evaluates work of subordinates.
o Monitors reference lab testing and result entry.
o Responsible for training and scheduling collectors for the Federal Drug Free Workplace program and coordinates collectors with Human Resource Service.
Supervisory Controls:
o The incumbent is directly accountable to the Chief Medical Technologist, P&LMS.
The incumbent works independently; supervision is mainly advisory in nature.
The incumbent provides first line supervision to several laboratory sections (Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Microbiology, Off-Hours, Phlebotomy, and CBOC's).
o The incumbent is responsible for informing Chief Medical Technologist, P&LMS of major problems and decisions in these areas.
o The incumbent receives assignments of a general nature from the Chief Medical Technologist, P&LMS.
Subsequent findings and recommendations are used by the Chief Medical Technologist as the basis for his/her subsequent decision-making.
Much of the incumbent's responsibilities are self-initiated, such as identifying and correcting problems, and identifying ways of improving the efficiency of the service.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
