Medical Technologist

This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System in Tuskegee, AL.
The Medical Technologist serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of Blood Bank, Chemistry and Special Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Immunohematology, Phlebotomy, Shipping and Receiving, and Reference Laboratory.
The generalist Medical Technologist rotates with other generalists on a regular basis in all areas and is required to perform the full range of procedures as delineated by the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performs a variety of standardized routine and specialized test procedures, including complex analyses and infrequently requested non-standard tests; evaluating abnormal results; using and maintaining equipment; and setting up and monitoring elements of quality control program; Selects, performs, evaluates, and monitors the performance of routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with the established protocols; Processes specimens using equipment, instruments, or techniques that are required for specific procedures, controls, physical conditions; responds to time factors to insure that the physiologic state of specimen is maintained; Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures; Correlates quantitative, biochemical, physiologic, and morphologic data with other laboratory data (e.
g.
, blood smear estimates with leukocyte and platelet counts, RBC appearance with indicators, CKMB with other enzyme analyses) and/or other patient data (history, physical findings, medications) to verify results; Advises on course of action to follow when values obtained from standard of control sample values are unacceptable; Examines functions of instruments, rechecks conditions of test performance, evaluates reaction systems and/or procedural techniques utilized, and identifies function with symptom; Manages inventory of all reagents, supplies, and blood components; Performs venipuncture to obtain samples for testing; assures that the proper specimen for a laboratory test has been identified; rejects improper specimens and request new specimens if acceptance criteria are not met; Accessions and prepares specimens for analysis and shipping to other laboratories or reference lab; Educates clinical laboratory science interns on a rotational basis in all sections of the laboratory; Provides patient care that is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronicle maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient; and,Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:
00 am ,- 4:
30 pm; however, required to work alternating weekends and holidays and off hour shifts if needed.
Designated Drug-Testing Position:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
