Chaplain for the Jewish Community
Bucknell University is accepting applications for a Chaplain for the Jewish Community. The Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life seeks to develop an inclusive religious and spiritual life community that reflects the overall academic mission of the university. We seek to carry out this mission by:
providing worship, learning and social opportunities appropriate to a university community, building creative connections between the life of the mind and the life of the spirit, providing opportunities for the education and development of students within their religious and cultural traditions, fostering a safe environment for spiritual and religious exploration, and encouraging respect and civil discourse among diverse religious groups and individuals.
The Chaplain for the Jewish Community will promote Jewish life on campus by serving as rabbi to Jewish students, staff and faculty, and by interpreting and representing Jewish religion and culture to the entire Bucknell community. The Chaplain for the Jewish Community reports to the University Chaplain.
Expected start date is July/August 2015.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Advise the Bucknell Hillel organization and provide support and guidance to Hillel student leaders.
2. Conduct religious services on campus, including Shabbat, High holiday, and Passover observances in consultation with student leaders.
3. Develop Jewish religious, cultural, and service programming in coordination with academic departments and program offices.
4. Provide pastoral counseling to students and make referrals to Psychological Services, Student Health Services, and other appropriate offices. Provide pastoral services to faculty, staff and community members.
5. Work with the University Chaplain, Chaplain for the Catholic Community, and other religious advisers to promote inter-religious understanding and appreciation for religious diversity.
6. Collaborate with other university offices within the division of student affairs and other departments (such as admissions) to ensure cohesive programming and services.
7. Work with and provide outreach to Bucknell's extended constituencies such as alumni, parents, area Jewish community and Jewish organizations.
8. Participate as needed in ceremonial occasions of the university such as memorial services, baccalaureate, commencement, and similar events.
9. Participate in division of student affairs or other university events and committees as requested.
10. May be requested to teach one course a year.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of rabbinical training from an accredited rabbinical school or college
- One year of experience working with young adults in an educational or inter-religious setting.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with all constituents of the University, as well as other professional educators, counselors and religious leaders.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
