The Scientific Data Group (SDG) in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Scientific Visualization to research and develop collaborative visualization and analysis tools and technologies that will be utilized by scientists running large scale simulations and/or analyzing large scale experimental/observational data.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
The selected candidate will work with application scientists, computer scientists, and students to research, and develop methods and techniques for accelerating scientific knowledge discovery. The candidate will work closely with other members of the SDG in deploying scientific visualization research into larger ecosystems. The candidate will help define new areas of collaborative research, and help foster new interactions between academia and the SDG.

Major responsibilities include: engaging in synergistic research and development that enable scientists to better understand experimental, observational, and simulation, data within a scientific data management framework. The candidate will work with group members to focus on activities that foster new insights into scientific data.
Other job duties:
o Work with scientific teams at DOE LCFs in providing visualization support, leading, and conducting research to solve challenges in scientific visualization.
o Work with the OLCF in deploying and helping scientists use scientific visualization tools, and techniques.
o Participate in high-performance-computing community-wide efforts to promote and advance scientific data management, analysis and visualization.
o Write, and participate in research proposals to major funding agencies.
o Plan, organize and participate in outreach activities promoting tools, and research.
o Present and publish research in journals, and conferences.
o Work with universities to foster new relationships and train students.
Qualifications Required
o Ph.D. in Computer Science, or a related field
o Expertise in methods and techniques for the visualization and analysis of large scientific data is required.
o Expertise in parallel programming, using MPI is required.
o Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors.
The selected candidate must be familiar with writing proposals to the DOE and/or the NSF.
o The candidate must be able to understand the end to end data needs for large scale scientific calculations, and be able to effectively interact with application scientists, and help provide visualization services and support.
o The candidate must have a strong research background, and be able to publish their results in top tier journals and conferences.
Additional Information:
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Certain exceptions may be considered. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
