Job Description:
The incumbent will manage all aspects of the operations of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory of University at Albany under Dr. D. Fabris' supervision. The incumbent will be responsible for the following tasks:
Troubleshooting and upkeep of a 12-Tesla Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR), an Orbitrap, and an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) mass spectrometer.
Troubleshooting and upkeep of different nano-LC systems and assorted laboratory equipment
Keeping contact with the manufacturers' service departments; interfacing with the University's Machine Shop, Physical Plant, and Purchasing departments
Purchasing parts and supplies to sustain the lab operations
Overseeing the utilization of lab instrumentation; coordinating the schedule of the various experiments; balancing the time dedicated to troubleshooting and hardware modifications versus normal usage
Training and assisting new users on the proper utilization of lab instrumentation
Actively participating in collaborative projects established by the Fabris' research group
Pursuing personal research projects under Dr. Fabris' supervision
Participating in the design and implementation of hardware modifications
Contributing to write the manuscripts resulting from collaborative and personal projects
Contributing to write grant proposals aimed at funding projects that utilize lab instrumentation
The incumbent will be expected to use initiative in the planning and execution of the different tasks; to maintain the research productivity necessary to cultivate a presence in the scientific community; to develop a good understanding of how to best prioritize the various tasks according to the situation on the ground; to maintain the maximum possible flexibility to facilitate the solution of unforeseen problems. The incumbent will report directly to Dr. Fabris, the laboratory principal investigator.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have a PhD degree in pertinent disciplines with at least two years post-doctoral experience. S/he will be required to have extensive hands on experience on at least one of the three types of mass spectrometers listed above. S/he will preferably have a background in proteomics and biopolymer analysis. The candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills. S/he will have excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a cross-disciplinary environment. S/he should also have demonstrated scientific productivity and be able to work independently but in close cooperation with the principal investigator and the rest of the research group.
