This is a full-time Temporary position located at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, in Suffolk, Virginia, which may be extended for up to a total of two years without re-announcement.

U.S. Citizenship
The incumbent serves as a fire fighter on an inter-agency fire crew supporting prescribed fire and fire suppression activities on federal, state, and private properties in Virginia and elsewhere. Assists in performs all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. Assists with collection of fire weather data, fuel and/or soil moisture samples, map projects, and maintains records. Incumbent utilizes a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and techniques in conducting prescribed burns and controlling and suppressing wildland fires, operates wildland fire engines, participates in formal and informal fire and safety training, and provides support for on-going natural resource projects on and off-refuge. The incumbent must be physically fit and able to successfully pass the arduous duty work capacity test.

In order to be qualified for this position , you must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-04: Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience;
Examples of qualifying general experience are: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding/tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; worked in a greenhouse, nursery or landscaping e.g., planting, moving, watering, and tending plants; animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store; volunteer work at a park, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience are: Performed a limited variety of manual tasks to accomplish fuels reduction work and suppress wildland fires using a variety of hand and power tools. At the instruction of a crew leader, patrolled fire line to locate and extinguish sparks, flare-ups, and hot spot fires that might threaten developed fire lines at the instruction of a crew leader, moved dirt, chopped brush, or felled small trees to build fire line using various hand tools and power saws to control spreading wildland fires and to prepare lines prior to prescribed burning
OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable;

A combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience as defined above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time or unpaid experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. In order to be qualified for this position, you must also meet the following SELECTIVE FACTOR:
SELECTIVE FACTOR: You MUST show in your resume/online application that you have a minimum of 90 days experience performing on-the-line (Primary/Rigorous) wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions.
NOTE: If you fail to show via your resume that you have the required 90 days wildland fire fighting experience, you will not receive further consideration for this position.
Status candidates must meet time in grade requirements (52 weeks at the next lower grade level).

You must be a United States Citizen to qualify for this position.
All new employees of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of pay prior to appointment.

Ability to maintain records, and compile daily observations.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
