Grand Junction is located on the Western Slope of Colorado where the weather is known to be mild throughout the year due to the lower altitude. Grand Junction VAMC is the home of Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Other well-known activities in the area are camping, hunting, hiking, mountain and road biking, rock climbing, golfing, rafting, fishing, skiing, and the vast amount of orchards and wineries. Major Duties:
Incumbent develops an assessment of the Veteran in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members, and significant others.
Incumbent develops treatment plans with the Veterans based on assessments, which sets achievable treatment goals with the Veterans and family.
Incumbent maintains accurate and up-to-date information and experience on all VA and/or community based resources.
Incumbent educates Veterans and/or caregivers of available services, as well as, facilitating assess to all appropriate referrals for the benefit of the Veterans. Incumbent will coordinate and collaborate with all other service providers.
Incumbent will act as an advocate when it services the best interest of the Veteran/family.
Incumbent makes rapid assessments and develops crisis management plans.
Incumbent will review the progress notes from the other providers to accurately determine the strength and limitations of each Veteran begin referred for mental health services.
Incumbent will provide the Veterans and their caregivers with ongoing supportive counseling to include individual, family, and group psychotherapy to Veterans as determined necessary.
Incumbent assumes complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation.
Incumbent will provide case management services, social work assessments, and supportive counseling to those patients admitted to the Inpatient Psychiatry Service.
Incumbent is assigned to the Mental Health Clinic in the Psychiatry Service, which has responsibility for providing a full range of therapeutic and case management services to Veterans and families.
Case Management for Inpatient Psychiatry Service - The social worker will provide case management services, social work assessments, and supportive counseling to those patients admitted to the Inpatient Psychiatry Service. This includes coordination and referral to with non-VA facilities and VA facilities. The social worker is also responsible for the coordination of care as the patient transitions back to our facility. The social worker will attend any telephone conferences or telephone calls established for the coordination of care.
Basic Requirements:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Hold a master's degree in mental health counseling, or a related field, from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of COunseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). A doctoral degree in mental health counseling may not be substituted for the master's degree in mental health counseling.
Licensure. Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice mental health counseling, which includes diagnosis and treatment.

Experience:
Demonstrated an understanding of the range of treatment and skills needed for all adult patients related to their physical limitations, psychological needs and age associated illnesses and conditions.
Must have working knowledge of the DSM IV including but not limited to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and other commonly seen problems of the Veteran patient.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of human growth and development, age-appropriate needs and concerns of the Veteran patient, and be able to apply current and advanced techniques to the treatment of this population.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations for GS-11: In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must have at least 1 year of post-master's degree mental health counseling experience.
