Mental Health Peer Residential Counselor - On Call
Certified Peer Counselors are individuals who have experienced mental illness themselves and are on their own recovery journey, well grounded in their own recovery and able to model competency in ongoing coping skills. They help clients identify goals that promote recovery and assist them in identifying services and activities to help reach these goals. Assist clients in obtaining, maintaining, and/or using appropriate mental health, general health, and other community resources relevant to their goals. Provide peer counseling, outreach, crisis intervention assistance, stabilization assistance; assist and support use of medical, community and natural supports, and facilitate psycho-education groups/classes. All services are provided under the supervision of a Mental Health Professional.
To be employed as a Peer Counselor a person must: 1. Be or commit to becoming Certified as a Peer Counselor by the State Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery within one year of employment, which involves completing specialized training approved by the State of WA and passing a written and oral State exam. The training and exam are free. This requires: Self-identifying as a person who is receiving or has received mental health services and demonstrating that they have been well grounded in their own mental health recovery for at least one year. 2. Pass a WA State criminal background check (no recent serious convictions). 3. Be eligible to become a WA State Agency Affiliated Counselor after being hired.
In addition, this position also requires the following knowledge and skills: knowledge of mental disorders and substance abuse issues, effective counseling skills, ability to assess and teach independent living skills, good interpersonal communication skills, and good computer-user skills. Prefer knowledge of Pierce County public mental health system, community resources, and recovery-based and trauma-informed models of care. Prefer having reliable personal auto, driver's license, good driving record, and personal auto insurance. Prefer AA degree in social services related field and 1 year experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
