This is a Term position. Initial appointment is 13 months with possible extensions up to 4 years. This position is also seasonal in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. You may work a minimum of 26 weeks (13 pay periods) but generally not more than 48 weeks (24 pay periods) a year. Actual work schedule and period of non-pay is contingent upon operational needs and/or weather conditions.
Government housing is not available.
This position is proposed to enter on duty February 22, 2015; however this is subject to change pending position management needs that may push the date into early spring of 2015.

AREA INFORMATION: Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime temperatures averaging 100 in the summer and 55 in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 85 in the summer to 30 in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located (2) miles from Park Headquarters. Full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles) and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-6) is available in Springdale with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane with bus service provided. Dixie College is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.
Major Duties: Plan and implement invasive exotic vegetation projects in front and backcountry locations. Responsibilities include prioritizing projects, selecting appropriate exotic plant control methods and leading work crews. Maintain inventory of all necessary supplies and materials for exotic plant management. Manage the proper use and storage of herbicides. Collect and manage field data. Supervise up to 4 seasonal Biological Science Technicians. Supervision is less than 25% of the duties and will include preparing work schedules, recruitment, staffing, employee relations, and developing and evaluating performance standards.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Friday, December 12, 2014 . Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.
QUALIFICATIONS : To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
Basic Educational requirements:
Successfully completed a full four year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position.
OR
Combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e., 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination demonstrates that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.

In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements indicated above, you must meet the additional specialized experience and/or education requirement as described below:
Specialized
Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience is experience performing biological science tasks common to natural resource managementsuch as collecting and organizing field data, conducting vegetation inventory and monitoring programs for a variety of species and communities; coordinating, leading, or administering and executing a wide variety of field techniques pertaining to exotic plant management; plant identification, using plant keys. Other experience may have included conducting field surveys to document and assess animal and/or plant presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, population dynamics and climate conditions using established protocols and use of standard scientific equipment.

Education: Successfully completed two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field such as biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines, and which has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work of this position.
OR
Combination of education and specialized
Experience: Example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and27 semester hours or 41 quarter hours of directly-related graduate level education in an accredited educational institution (50% of the qualifying education).

Requirements
1. You may be required to serve a trial period of 1 year.
2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
3. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
