Maine Conservation Corps
The Maine Conservation Corps, with AmeriCorps, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Maine Commission for Community Service, launched a program in 2013 exclusively for veterans and those who currently serve in the National Guard and Reserves: the Community Leader Program. The mission of the program is to integrate military veterans back into civilian jobs within the conservation field.
Recent federal reforms not only ensure that veterans leave the service with career-ready credentials and training which translate into civilian jobs, but also will help employers locate veterans with the right skills and training. This initiative to support veterans is a fundamental part of the national strategy to lay the foundation for a stronger economic recovery and create quality jobs for Americans.
Community Leaders are given training and instruction for 11 weeks in such areas as:
Grant Writing
Advanced Project Planning
Grip Hoist operations
Chainsaw Operation
Wilderness First Responder (Optional, when instruction is available)
Portfolio Creation
Resume Writing
Trail Layout and Design
Trail Maintenance
Volunteer Recruitment & Management
Fundraising
Leadership and Communication
Stone and Timber Work
The Community Leader uses the skills acquired from the military to recruit volunteers for their sponsor sites, trains those volunteers in conservation, trail rehabilitation and maintenance, and structure construction (bridges, stairs, etc.), and leads volunteers in various community projects.
But it doesnt stop there! Community outreach stems from other activities, such as:
Town meetings
Recreational club meetings
School visits (to educate youth)
Environmental classes for the community
Leave No Trace training
Because of the activity drawn from this program, it serves as a perfect networking opportunity with those whom have been working in the conservation field for most, if not all, of their lives.
To qualify for the Community Leader Program, you must meet the following criteria:
& Must have past or present service with the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserves
& Have a DD 214 showing an honorable discharge
& High School diploma or equivalent
& Must be at least 18-years-old
& Must be a U.S. Citizen
& Must agree to criminal and sex offender background checks
& Have the ability to live and perform strenuous work under challenging conditions
& Have the desire to learn, serve others, and make a difference
& Follow directions
& Be responsible and reliable
& Have good communication skills
& Have an excellent work ethic
& Possess motivation and initiative
& Interest in personal growth and in participating in on-going training
& Eligibility for AmeriCorps and ability to complete 45-week term of service
There are 45-week positions available throughout the State of Maine, beginning January 5, 2015.
