Summary: Assists Range Supervisor and personnel in the general coordination and range operations for the indoor sshooting range at Fort Meade, Maryland. Ensures that indoor range training and use is conducted within Fort Meade operations parameters. Inspects ranges prior to use, identifies operational limitations, reports maintenance and repair requirements, coordinates with operations and Fort Meade staff as necessary to support training and range requirements.

Responsibilities: Performs all duties as a Range Operator and Maintainer. Ensures proper management of range operations in accordance with safety and Army regulation, policy, and procedural guidance. Inspects and oversees usage of training areas by units training on the installation. Inspects, troubleshoots, and replaces all micro-circuit switches and performs all mechanical repairs on target mechanisms to include level 1 and 2 maintenance up to direct support. Operates necessary telecommunications equipment. Inspects, services and issues informational materials, equipment and keys; and maintains logs in support of training. Assists range personnel in computer system, equipment and applications.
Inspects ranges, training areas, facilities and firing positions prior to unit arrival, before live fire exercises and before unit departure for occupation, usage and clearance. Conducts inspections of areas and facilities being used by units to ensure training on all ranges is performed in accordance with applicable regulations, instructions, and other guidelines. Directs corrective action, if necessary, refers more serious problems (e.g., conflicts between units) to attention of supervisor. Identifies adverse conditions and makes recommendations to supervisor on improving procedures related to safety, environmental protection, etc. Recommendations are based on evaluation of information that comes from a variety of sources. Handles and resolves a wide variety of problems on a daily basis. Adapts guides to apply to one-of-a-kind situations. Activates applicable emergency procedures for medical evacuation, range fires, severe weather warnings, other weapon system accidents and any other system malfunctions and unsafe conditions. Interacts with military personnel of all ranks on a continuous basis to provide guidance on regulations and procedures for maneuver land use, live fire safety, area cleanup, environmental concerns and restrictions, etc. Prepares range training facility maintenance facility reports. Prepares hazardous spill and maneuver damage reports. Ensures accident scenes are protected until appropriate investigations have been completed. Marks Landing Zones and ground guides MEDEVAC aircraft. Operates and maintains all-terrain type vehicles and performs preventive maintenance as required.
Operates all range master computer systems, and Radio Frequency controlled computers and target systems. Uses practical knowledge of computer systems' hardware and software and general knowledge of ADP standards, policies and techniques approved for use within AWG Indoor Range, to assist customers and employees as required in automated systems, equipment and applications. Independently installs, loads, sets up, upgrades, and configures various types of off-the-shelf, locally developed software, systems, peripheral devices and network systems. Ensures hardware and software are compatible and properly configured in order to preclude malfunctions and conflicts in programs and operating systems. Uses knowledge of diagnostic techniques, methods and utility programs to troubleshoot software, hardware, and peripheral devices.
Operates radio, telephone, intercommunication, and other systems within Fort Meade Ranges and Range Operations, and uses proper communications procedures to establish and maintain constant contact with Range Operations, AWG Operations to ensure units are assigned areas and to respond to request for assistance. Reviews and ensures compliance with unit safety briefing printouts and maintains daily communications logs, DA Forms 2404, 2407, and 1594 .
Makes minor carpentry and electrical repairs to all types of targets; powers up generators during power outages. Service requirements for Air filtration systems, target systems, and other indoor range components. Cleans up debris left by units in training areas and ranges; maintains warehouse area; washes range vehicles; etc. Must operate or be able to operate a variety of equipment if given the proper training. Equipment includes sedans, pickups, 15 passenger Vans tractors, utility vehicles etc
Required Skills and Education
Required education: High School/GED
Must be availble to conduct a face to face interview at Fort Meade.
Must have a security clearance. Must be familiar with firearms, ammunition, and be capable of operating a 14 lane, 50m indoor range. Must be familiar with and operate the indoor range within OSHA guidelines and hearing protection standards. Must be entered into a blood and hearing conservation program administered by the US Army for lead and hearing protection levels. Must be trained and licensed to operate government vehicles, light duty trucks.
