This is a student internship appointment located at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The internship program is designed to prepare students for a professional engineering career. The Student Trainee will perform work of limited difficulty and complexity similar to that of other personnel of the same grade level.
Upon completion of requirements for graduation and successful completion of the internship, the appointee may become eligible for non-competitive conversion, at the agency's discretion, to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.
Salary will be increased by the applicable cost-of-living allowance (COLA), which is subject to change without notice.
PLEASE NOTE:
All intern assignments are located at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii and may be during summer, normal school vacation periods, and/or during the school year. Selectees will be responsible for relocation and living expenses while in Hawaii during the work period. _No relocation, housing, or other expenses will be provided/paid._

The Pathways Intern Program is a work experience that provides an opportunity for college students to pursue work that is relevant and beneficial to their academic studies. Trainees will adopt theory and practices of Engineering to the assignments and justify approaches taken, methodology, and conclusions to other members of the team or the supervisor. Assignments are part of a project and may involve developing information from a variety of sources.
The Pathways Intern program is an excellent opportunity for students to get an interesting, real-world experience in the field of engineering while contributing to the defense of our nation.

_For the GS-04:_
You must have successfully completed at least 2 full academic years of post-high school study or successfully completed an Associate's degree within 9 months of the closing date of the job announcement.
_For the GS-05:_
You must have successfully completed 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree within 9 months of the closing date of this job announcement.

_PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:_
Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
Be a US Citizen
Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
Complete their degree or certificate requirements
Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
Perform their job successfully
Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.
In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.
Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.
_QUALIFYING EDUCATION:_
1) A high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such a body or a State; and
2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:
(i) A technical or vocational school;
(ii) A 2-year or 4-year college or university;
(iii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or
(iv) A home-school curriculum
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements, if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
