Position Summary :
A Counselor in the Office of Student Financial Aid (SFA) that works under supervision of the Associate Director in the Client Services Unit. This position is responsible for providing counseling and referral services to financial aid applicants, parents, other University offices and external agencies. This position participates in office outreach activities on and off-campus.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities :
Provides financial aid counseling to enrolled students, prospective students, and their families. This includes information about the availability of federal, state and institutional aid programs, eligibility requirements, and application requirements. This counseling may be provided in person, via phone or email and at group presentations or outreach events.
Effective financial aid counseling requires both counseling and problem-solving skills. Must be able to understand a student's situation and their concerns, then use knowledge of aid eligibility requirements, as well as University policies to suggest a range of possible options that support that individual's success.
Collaborates with other University offices in an effort to assist students (current and prospective) and their families in regards to student financial aid, payment of fees, etc. Refers students and parents to appropriate offices for assistance as necessary.
Assists with activities related to the University default prevention program, including contacting student loan borrowers identified as being delinquent making federal loan repayment.
Assists with resolving issues related to applicants being identified as being either independent or dependent on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); assists with the Dependency Appeal process for SFA.
Attends training conferences, workshops, and remains abreast of federal and state updates pertaining to financial aid.
Incorporates knowledge of federal, state and institutional regulations and policies regarding a variety of financial aid programs into work practices.
Reviews, makes decisions and completes processing and communication tasks for student appeals related to aid eligibility. Examples include reviewing appeals for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), Dependency Appeals (DAP), Housing Appeals (HAP).
Maintains general & fiscal records & files relating to area for counseling; processes paperwork involved in assisting students; conducts correspondence; etc.
May perform research in area of counseling & prepare reports; may prepare periodic federal, state, university reports.
Answers incoming phone calls to Student Financial Aid.
Makes presentations to groups regarding financial aid programs. These outreach activities often fall on weekends and do require work hours be scheduled outside the typical Mon.- Fri., 8am - 5pm work week. (Examples include Preview Days, SFA Workshop for Families, College Recruitment Fairs, SOAR Orientation sessions, Multicultural Recruitment Events, and activities related to Fall and Spring semester opening weekends.)
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Salary :
Six months related experience and High school diploma or GED required. Salary Classified Staff Pay Grade 25/$14.20

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
