This is a CAREER-SEASONAL POSITION , therefore you will be guaranteed at least 26 weeks of work, but not more than 48 in one service year.
This position is located within the National Park Service, Pacific West Region, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Resource Management & Visitor Services Division, Natural Resources Branch, GIS Office, in Boulder City, NV.
OBTAIN A FAVORABLY ADJUDICATED BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION PRIOR TO START MUST HOLD A VALID STATE DRIVERS LICENSE
You will operate, update, and maintain GIS software, hardware, and associated peripheral devices. You will maintain and update the park's cartographic base data using information from field surveys, aerial photographs, hard copy maps, and digital data from other entities. Travel to field sites will be required to gather information while utilizing GPS field mapping techniques which may include GPS hardware and software such as Trimble and Garmin GPS receivers, TerraSync, ArcPad, Pathfinder Office, DNR Garmin. You will utilize GIS, GPS, and related programs and technology to analyze data to recommend the most appropriate course of action to meet park objectives. Plan and implement projects that involve the collection or creation of digital geospatial data, or the portrayal of digital spatial data through professional quality cartographic products. You will maintain the network server that hosts the park's GIS data library, provide advice in response to park GIS technical requests, and share/exchange GIS, GPS and other digital information through established channels of data distribution.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work requires long periods of sitting in front of computer terminals. Some prolonged bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing and reaching are required to perform routine hardware maintenance and move equipment. Digitizing data requires extended periods of standing, sitting and stretching over large drafting tables while recording/measuring map data with computer mouse. The work is usually performed in an office setting. Outdoor field work in varied climatic and terrain conditions is required.

FOR THE GS-07: You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is cartographic or biological technician-level work that involved the application of GIS/GPS practices to collect, compile, reduce, store, retrieve, analyze, and report data and geospatial information directly related to resource management activities, including wildlife and vegetation management, invasive species management, water resource management of geological and paleontological resources, and/or management of prehistoric and historic cultural resources.
NOTE: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Credit will be given for all qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received and whether the experience was gained as a part-time or full-time occupation. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience , your resume must indicate clearly: 1. The nature of your duties and responsibilities in each position; and 2. Complete dates of employment period (e.g. MM/YY to MM/YY, MM/YYYY to Present, etc.); and 3. The number of hours per week spent in such employment for each position.
In lieu of the specialized experience requirements you may substitute the following education:
GS-07: Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in cartography, geography, or geographic information systems from an accredited educational institution.
A combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total minimum qualification requirements. It is your responsibility to provide documented proof that you have met the applicable educational provisions. Unofficial college transcript(s); a statement from the registrar, dean, or other appropriate official; or equivalent documentation (a listing of college courses completed) is acceptable. Failure to submit your documentation will result a not qualified rating. Official transcripts will be required prior to a start date. GOVERNMENT CREDIT CARD: You are required to obtain (through applicable government training) and use a government-issued credit card.
OPERATOR IDENTIFICATION: You will be required to operate a government vehicle, therefore, must be able to acquire and hold a valid state Driver's License. If selected, a three (3) year driving history check will be required.
WORK SCHEDULE: This is a subject to non-pay, permanent, full-time position; subject to shift work, night and/or weekends, emergency call-out, considerable driving to and from all areas within the park, and may include working holidays.
INFORMATION REGARDING NON-PAY: In this position, you will be guaranteed work at least 26 weeks, but not more than 48 in a service year. Dependent upon park workload needs and funding, individual positions may work more than 26 weeks. When services are not required, you will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status, unemployment compensation may be applied for during this time. You will work 40 hours per week when in duty and pay status. Salary, vacation and sick leave earnings, which are normally based on year-round employment, will be prorated according to the number of weeks actually worked each year. The waiting period of probationary period, within-grade increases, and career tenure will also be extended by a portion of the time spent in non-pay status.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You are required to complete a one-year probationary period beginning on the effective date of this appointment.

KSA #5: Ability to communicate professionally and effectively about technical subjects.
