The Computer Science Research Group (CSR) in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the fields of computational science and high-performance computing, working at the intersection of physics and materials science.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be part of a multi-institutional team of physical scientists, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians addressing cutting-edge challenges in the modeling and simulation of plasma-surface interactions for fusion energy devices (https://collab.mcs.anl.gov/display/PSIscidac/). The candidate's role will focus on continuum modeling of materials exposed to plasmas (https://sourceforge.net/projects/xolotl-psi) targeting large-scale simulations on parallel computers and is expected to include a combination of software development carrying out simulations for a variety of purposes, including testing and validation, uncertainty quantification, and scientific research. Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings is expected.

Qualifications Required

A PhD in physics, materials science, nuclear engineering, applied mathematics, or a closely related field
Strong programming skills, including experience in C++. Applicants will be asked to submit a code sample using an object-oriented language (other than Fortran; C++2011 preferred)
Experience with parallel computing
Demonstrated ability to work successfully in interdisciplinary teams, crossing the traditional boundaries of computer science and computational science research
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
Effective interpersonal skills

Additional Qualifications Desired
Experience with large-scale parallel simulation in physics, materials science, or nuclear engineering
Experience with uncertainty quantification methodology and tools
Educational or practical experience in the design and use of large-scale technical or scientific software systems
Experience with agile software development practices, test-driven development, and continuous integration
Experience with at least one distribution of Linux

Additional Information: Applicants cannot have received their PhD more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment with an initial appointment not to exceed 24 months. Certain exceptions may be considered.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
