We are currently seeking a Design Director for the L.L.Bean Signature Brand . L.L.Bean Signature designs clothing, footwear and accessories for men and women, incorporating modern takes on some of the L.L.Bean classics to create a line that is appealing to our Signature target consumer. The successful candidate will focus on directing the product design for apparel, footwear and accessories for L.L.Bean Signature.
Develop and design an assortment of merchandise that strengthens the Signature Brand position in the Market. Research market (domestic and international) to identify concepts and opportunities for product design. Provide strategic design direction and collaborate with Product Managers to develop a dynamic product assortment that support the brand image and achieve quantifiable business results. Clearly communicate Design direction in fit sessions. Assume primary responsibility for consistency of design across all product categories to ensure a more cohesive identity across L.L.Bean Signature product assortment.
Creates seasonal collections for L.L.Bean Signature, Men's & Women's
Conduct, evaluate, and apply market research (domestic and international) to identify current trends in fit, finish, silhouette, fabric, and color
Determine color palettes and create concept boards by consulting with Product Managers, but assuming primary responsibility for overall setting of color palettes
Guide print and pattern selection in order to achieve cohesiveness across product lines
Brainstorm with Product Managers to come up with concepts/silhouettes and develop overall seasonal strategy for product line
Work with Product Managers in the perfecting of style through refining and revisions of product samples
Work collaboratively with Fit Team to lower return rates and enhance product fit and aesthetics, perfecting silhouettes, refining design details and revisions on product samples
Serve as creative liaison to catalog production in helping to select color features and styling of outfits for catalog shoots
Manage assigned personnel

o Coach and develop employees in job related skills through work assignment, direct training, and regular feedback, both positive and constructive
o Administer wages and salaries
o Resolve personnel problems following company policies and procedures
o Assist employees in identifying personal development and career needs, providing guidance and support
o Communicate and monitor adherence to company policies, procedures, and programs
o Review and update job descriptions, organization structure and staffing levels and related records
o Minimize risks of work related injuries and illnesses and associated costs, including lost work time
Health and Safety Requirement: Ensures compliance with the L.L.Bean Comprehensive Health and Safety program by knowing and following all safety guidelines, policies, procedures and expectations. Take immediate and appropriate action to rectify any unsafe conditions. Ensure compliance of front line employees with comprehensive health and safety program.
Individual should have a true passion for design and keen understanding of textile sciences and product development.
Strong management and leadership skills.
Able to relate to the L.L.Bean product line, image, and taste and give insights into its continued growth, working collaboratively in order to achieve results.
Must be able to travel domestically and to Europe approximately 5 weeks out of the year-maximum (10% of time in a year spent traveling).
7 to 10
years proven apparel design experience.
BA/BS or equivalent required.
