Direct Deposit Required. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to the following:
Directing the operation of a wildland fire engine, ensuring proper use and operation.
Performing personally and directing others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives.
Being responsible for maintenance of equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations.
Ensuring the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
Providing technical and administrative supervision to wildland fire engine crews.
Implementing formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations.
Participating in wildland fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fire suppression activities, with emphasis on those used for the particular function assigned.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Duties involve rigorous field work requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior condition. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds. The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites/stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Incumbent may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.).

Wildland Firefighting Experience Requirement:
This position requires previous wildland firefighting experience (at least 90 days). Wildland firefighting experience is defined as experience gained through work on the fire line in containment, control, or suppression of wildland fire. Experience may be related to wildfires, wildland fire use, or fire line experience on a prescribed fire (this does not include experience in the planning stages).
NWCG Incident Management Qualifications - currency is not required; however, applicants must have held full qualification(s)/currency at some point in their career. If not fully qualified, the incumbent will be required to re-gain and maintain currency in the following: - Single Resource Engine Boss (ENGB) AND Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4).

For GS-06: One year of specialized wildland fire experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Examples include on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work as a skilled wildland firefighter, utilizing a variety specialized wildland fire tools and equipment, at this level the employee is given general explanation and advice of what is to be done from a higher graded employee - OR - One half year (9 semester hours) of graduate education DIRECTLY related to the work of the position.
For GS-07: One year of specialized wildland fire experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples include on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work as a skilled lead wildland firefighter, utilizing a wide variety specialized wildland fire tools and equipment, at this level employee has a general discussion of what is to be done with a higher graded employee - OR - One year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education DIRECTLY related to the work of the position. Equivalent combinations of post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

This is a LONG-TERM CAREER SEASONAL position (6 to 11 1/2 months). It is expected that the incumbent will work at least 6 months per year, but not more than 11 1/2 months. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.
