The incumbent is assigned to the Quality Management Service, Office of the Director. The Infection Preventionist (IP) functions as a resource person and consultant for infection prevention activities in an effort to ensure that Veterans, staff, and leadership needs are provided in a safe environment and in a timely manner.The IP is responsible and accountable for the provision of information, education, training, and technical support for all employees related to infection prevention. The incumbent collaboratively interacts with a variety of facility programs to include all healthcare settings within the organization to provide expert knowledge and information that will result in comprehensive, patient centered outcomes. Strong interactive and collegial interactions are essential to the IP initiatives. The IP uses sound judgment in decision making, applying leadership and analytical skills, and is self-directed.
The Infection Preventionist (IP) assumes the leadership role in ensuring the facility meets the regulatory requirements for this program to include The Joint Commission (TJC), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), VHA Directives and Handbooks, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Office of the Medical Inspector, Office of the Inspector General, and VHA performance measures. The incumbent implements performance improvement work to support infection prevention practices and provides support and guidance to leadership and front-line staff to address outlier performance. The incumbent ensures that services have systems and processes in place to support infection prevention practices which provide safe, quality, care consistent with external benchmarks. Incumbent integrates surveillance findings into the organization's plan for improvement of practice and patient outcomes and applies epidemiological principles including risk stratification to identify target populations, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies. Incumbent consults and acts as a resource to leadership and staff in infection control standards interpretation, implementation, and re-design of processes and structures to improve care outcomes. The incumbent develops and writes policy.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Experience:
A minimum of one (1) year of recent successful professional (RN) nursing experience is required.
Acute clinical nursing experience and familiarity with Infection Control standards relating to JCAHO, OSHA, Federal and other Public Health Agencies preferred.
Recent professional (RN) nursing experience as an Infection Control Practitioner is preferred.
National certification as CIC (Certified in Infection Control) or plan to obtain certification within appropriate timeframe
Bachelor of Science in Nursing OR Associate Degree in Nursing WITH Bachelor degree in a healthcare related field

Grade Determinations: Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:
Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;

Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;
Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
