Responsible for supervising Melting and/or Casting function and staff to ensure adequate liquid steel and billet production of sufficient quality and at minimal cost. Accountable for either the entire melting or casting function in order to supply liquid steel and adequate billet production in the correct grade, quantity and quality to meet the timely demands of customer requirements and AISI standards and establish melting practices and procedures necessary to fulfill duties. Actively involved in recruiting, training, disciplining and motivating the supervised employees to meet production schedules. Establish safety rules and accident prevention programs within established guidelines. Direct OSHA conformance functions to correct unsafe conditions, cooperate with the Safety Manager in developing and directing programs to create and maintain employee interest and participation toward safety, and advise supervisors of proper interpretation and applications of company personnel policies toward safety. Recommend capital expenditures to provide more efficiency, lower costs, higher quality, and quantity production. Maintain departmental housekeeping activities in accordance with established procedures. Combine efforts of people, equipment, and material to meet production goals and standards while controlling production costs within the established guidelines. Attain predetermined production goals through the efficient utilization of available equipment, personnel, and material. Establish standard melting and casting practices for control of production methods, quality, personnel, and cost. Responsible for proper, efficient and effective work methods and plant equipment to improve production capacity and quality of product. Cooperate with other supervisors, departments, and services to maintain coordinated efficiency of operations. Responsible for proper operation and utilization of equipment to prevent damage and minimize repairs. Responsible for employee safety, turnover, attendance control, and administration of discipline. Cooperate with other departments to maintain minimum downtime operation. Resolve employee grievances within the scope of the job. Monitor the scrap yard operation to ensure adequate supply of requested scrap and other services to the melt shop. Coordinate bulk alloy and lime deliveries. Ensure the Cardinal Safety Rules are followed. Implement and maintain Gerdau Business Systems within the Melt Shop. Manage departmental budget and meeting the EMM goals. Complete all required annual safety and environmental training (inc. fugitive dust). Responsible for spill prevention, containment, response and clean up or assist in clean up of spills. Know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices. Enforce environmental compliance to procedures, practices and regulations within the department. Participate in crew meetings to establish communication and cover safety, environmental, quality, cost/delivery, and departmental concerns.Required: Bachelors degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related field (or FDE) and five (5) years of progressive industrial engineering experience including arc melting and casting, applying engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximizing the efficiency of overall department operation; 3 years of leadership experience.
